Nikwax underwent establishment in the 1970s when Nick Brown began developing a unique, high performance waterproofing treatment for use on outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment. The original formulation was intended for the preservation of leather walking boots in a way that was non-softening and prolonged their durability. Out of this initial motive came a desire to produce a range of completely safe cleaning and waterproofing agents that would keep you dry whilst protecting the environment.

Nick’s novel approach to the product led him to patent a ‘green,’ water-based treatment that replaced the toxic waterproofing solvents already on the market. Today, the Nikwax range encompasses a number of products that are developed for a multitude of cleaning and waterproofing uses; everything from tents to woollen clothing and shoelaces can be treated by Nikwax to resist the elements. Environmentally safe with no harmful gases or fluorocarbons, all Nikwax products can be easily applied to your outdoor gear in the washing machine, by using a spray-on treatment, or by hand.
