Water and Electrolytes: Vital for Life
Water makes up approximately 60-65% of an adult animal's body weight and is essential for nearly all normal body functions to occur. Most of this fluid is inside the cells with only 20% being outside the cells and as little as 5% inside the blood vessels.
Fluid balance in your pet, including how water is absorbed or secreted, is intrinsically linked to the concentration of certain molecules known as electrolytes. Even slight alterations in electrolytes can significantly impact hydration levels in the body and therefore the normal functioning of cells and organs.
In healthy animals, regulatory mechanisms ensure minor daily variations in fluid and electrolytes have minimal impact on normal physiology. However excessive fluid and electrolyte loss, or significantly reduced intake, will rapidly disrupt this balance.

Using this to help our 10 year old Labrador, who has Immune mediated polyarthritis. He’s now on very low dose of steroids but this and his Labrador instinct to eat anything does sometimes cause stomach upsets. Oralade keeps him hydrated and enables him to recover quickly.

Hi - I have a fit and healthy American Lab who loves trail running. Can Oralade be used as a hydration drink before and/or after exercise for her. Many thanks
Yes it can, it is recommended to use the Oralade Hydrate Plus for this though as it is intended for this use.

Is this any good for a dog with constipation
If the constipation is related to a lack of fluid intake then yes Oralade GI Support may be beneficial. Depending on the cause of the constipation you may wish to use laxative products instead, such as Laxapet. It is important that you know it is constipation though and see your vet if you are unsure.

Is this product suitable for a 14 year old diabetic dog with heart murmur. She has wet food but hardly drinks additional water
Any change to the diet of a diabetic dog may change the insulin requirements. It is therefore only advised to use this alongside veterinary advice. It likely it will be safe however we cannot guarantee this, only your vet can advise for definite. I apologise we cannot be of much help.

Hi there,
I just wanted to know if this is safe to give dogs on a regular basis who have kidney disease? I can't seem to find the nutritional info for phosphorus levels etc.
Many thanks .
This depends on the severity of your dog's kidney disease. Diet is very important when controlling kidney issues and in some cases any change in diet can be a problem. It is advised to discuss this with your vet to be safe, only they will know of your dog's specific condition.

With the severe weather in place for extreme hot weather I was wondering if this would be suitable to add to my dogs fluid intake to prevent dehydration? I am already taking the usual steps of walking very early and very late when it is cooler, have cooling mats, fans on etc but they do not enjoy the hot weather and their appetite drops off so want to support them where I can. Many thanks
Oralade is a good choice as a brand for helping keep your dog hydrated in the hot weather. I recommend checking out Oralade Hydrate Plus if you are purchasing just with the heat in mind, the GI Support Fluid is more suited to intestinal issues such as diarrhoea.

How long can it be left in a bowl for in this warm weather please? Thank you.
The storage requirements state:
Store in refrigerator after opening. Use the product within 3 days after opening.
This means you need to refidgerate it after opening, if any is left out in a bowl during warm weather then it is safest to throw this rather than refridgerate after being in the heat for an hour or so. I recommend approaching this similarly to food being left out in a bowl, try to only pour into your pet's bowl the amount they need to drink.

Is oralade a one off treatment or what is the schedule/ dosage pattern? Thank you
The Oralade GI Support range is intended to aid recovery from intestinal issues. It aims to support hydration of the guts as well as the body in general. It is recommended for use until your pet has fully recoevered or dehydration is no longer a concern.
You should dose the product according to the feeding guide, I have pasted this below for your convenience. It may be that most of the water you lay down for your pet needs to be the Oralade GI liquid to ensure the complete amount is drunk as per the feeding guide.

Can you give oralade to your dog as an energy booster, my dog isn't ill she has a little bit of a loose stool today & wondered if giving her some oaralade will help?? I didn't know if it was just something they have after an illness which is what she's had it for in the past!?
Thankyou.
Oralade GI Support is primarily intended for rehydration of the guts to improve recovery from intestinal issues like diarrhoea. If your dog has loose stools then it should help improve the condition. It does contains sugars/electrolytes so will provide some form of energy boost too.
If you are looking to solely firm up the stools rather than rehydrate your dog too then I recommend a product like ReguTum paste as these are more suited to stool firming.

Would this help a puppy that is a few days old with constipation?
This product will help hydrate and rehydrate anpuppy with constipation which in turn can help the condition. However I recommend contacting your vet to diagnose the issue as a pup should not be constipated and there could be an underlying issue to this.

Unopened,
- should it be stored in the fridge?
- how long will it typically last?
The Oralade we currently have in stock has an expiry of February 2020 if unopened. It should be stored in a cool, dry place such as a cupboard. Once opened you should keep it in the fridge and use within 3 days or freeze and re-use within 12 months.
