Description

For use in small rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, hamsters, mice, gerbils, chinchillas and other small rodents up to 1250 g body weight, and birds less than 666 g body weight.

The active substance ivermectin is a substance known as an endectocide because it kills parasites that cause infestation inside the body (endoparasites) as well as those living outside the body, on the skin (ectoparasites). Ivermectin is used in many species for the control of mites, roundworms and lice.

Read packet information fully before use.

Bearded dragons

Sereta

Will this help kill mites on a bearded dragon?!

  • VioVet Staff

This medication is licensed for use on small rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, hamsters, mice, gerbils, chinchillas and other small rodents up to 1250 g body weight, and birds less than 666 g body weight. Unfortunately it is not licensed for use on reptiles and so we cannot advise it for use in this species. We recommend getting in touch with your local vet for treatment options if you can.
We do stock Beaphar Insect Spray which is suitable for use on reptiles though and is effective against mites.

What is the minimum age a guinea pig can have a Xeno treatment.

  • VioVet Staff

There is no minimum age on the datasheet for Xeno, just a minimum weight of 25g. The datasheet mentions that adverse reactions ‘may be more common in young animals. Should such a reaction occur, discontinue use and seek veterinary advice’.
So a risk vs benefit analysis is recommended when considering the use of Xeno in young small mammals. This may be safest done by your local vet.

Ear mites

Paul

Does this or idiocy kill ear mites in rabbits?

  • VioVet Staff

I cannot comment upon what idiocy may achieve, but this product does kill mites. It has a systemic effect through the active ingredient ivermectin, but repeated treatments may be needed to eradicate the parasite. Adding a few drops of olive oil to the ear canal is a traditional and reasonably effective treatment for mites within the ear too. It seems to work by blocking the respiratory spiracles of the mites, so they drown. It will not work for any mites which may be living on any other parts of the skin however, which sometimes happens. Personally I would do both treatments together, as the oil is soothing for the ear too and helps to loosen and elevate the waxy debris which can accumulate in the canal.
