Description

Vitofyllin is given to older dogs to improve their alertness and energy levels. It has a variety of effects in the body, including improving blood flow to the brain and to muscles, stimulating brain function and acting as an anti-oxidant against free radicals. The usual dose rate is 3-5mg per kilogram bodyweight, given twice daily. Vitofyllin is not absorbed well from the stomach if food is present, so it is much better to give on an empty stomach (or with a tiny morsel of food) and then to feed 30 minutes later.

Use a prescription medication for my dog who is starting to show signs of dementia and the cost from the vets was prohibitive, I asked the vet to write a prescription for me which I forwarded to Viovet and now get the medication sent monthly at a much reduced cost

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Vitofyllin Tablets for Dogs, including answers from our team.

Timing of dosage

Kris B

  • VioVet customer since 2013
  • From: Dorset, United Kingdom

I feed my dog 3 x a day 07:45, 16:45 and 19:15 hrs. I have been giving the tablet before breakfast and early evening; as ideally the dosage should be 12 hrs apart is it OK to give the later dose half an hour before his supper? Wasn’t sure whether his stomach would be classified as empty? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only medication so you should run any dose changes past your prescribing vet.
The datasheet states the following:
The tablets can be administered directly onto the back of the dog's tongue or can be mixed in a small ball of food and should be administered at least 30 minutes before feeding.
According to this, giving the dose at least 30 minutes before the evening meal is suitable and advised.

Side effects Vitofyllin

Avril

What might be common side effects to watch out for when my 15yr old dog starts taking Vitofyllin?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding adverse events:
On rare occasions, (more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 10,000 animals treated), allergic skin reactions, vomiting and cardiac disturbances have been reported. In these cases, the treatment should be stopped.
There are no common side effects for this medication according to the datasheet.

How long can a dog safely take this medication for?

Duration of usage

Vet has sold us 10 days worth but very expensive. Is it safe to keep our pooch medicated for a longer duration? Say for 2 or 3 months daily...

  • VioVet Staff

There is no information in the datasheet regarding treatment duration. It is therefore advised to discuss this with your vet further, we can only recommend what the datasheet states.

Timing of doses

Margaret

My vet has said give medication 12 hours apart, but this won't work with my dogs feeding pattern. Would it cause any harm if there was 10 hours between doses, 08.00hrs and 18.00hrs followed 30 mins later by food?

  • VioVet Staff

You should follow your vet's dosing advice wherever possible. If every 12 hours is logistically not possible then a 10 hour gap is far better than missing a dose and will likely be fine, but it is still worth checking this past your vet to be certain it is suitable.

Miss a dose

Shaza

My dog has had some diahorea but not as a result of the medication. She has been on them for years.
As I want to fast her for 24 hours can I still give her her tablets on an empty stomach or is it OK to miss a dose

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this medication is safe to give on an empty stomach. The datasheet actually states the following;
The tablets can be administered directly onto the back of the dog's tongue or can be mixed in a small ball of food and should be administered at least 30 minutes before feeding.
This means it is intended to be given on an empty stomach. If your dog is unwell and this continues then it is worth running further use of the medication past your vet.

Form of medication

Karen Byatt

Are these tablets actual tablets or are they capsules? It’s very difficult to split a capsule in half! I was hoping they were tablets much easier to deal with

  • VioVet Staff

The form of these tablets are as follows:
Film-coated tablets.
Yellow, round convex tablets with cross-snap-tab on one side and imprinting "50" or "100" on the other side.
The tablet can be divided into 2 or 4 equal parts.

Vitofyllin

Tracey

Is it ok for my dog to take Vitofyllin tablets while taking synulox for an infection? Plus could not waiting 30 mins before giving food after giving my dog vitofyllin
be dangerous?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet does not state that Vitofyllin should react with medications like Synulox so there should be no issue with this. I recommend running this past your vet though as they should be aware of what medications your pet is on and why.
It is advised to give Vitofyllin 30mins before food because it is best absorbed on an empty stomach. There is no danger giving it with or after food but it might not be as effective if administered in this way.

Vitofyllin vs. RenewMe

Sheila Haight

If my dog is taking RenewMe, what additional benefits would the Vitofyllin give? And can I add Aktivait, or is that too much "stuff"?

  • VioVet Staff

Vitofyllin aims to help support the brain by improving blood supply to it. RenewMe Vitality & Cognitive support is a supplement that nutritionally supports brains function, they both do different things and can be used safely together. Vitofyllin is a prescription only medication so you should discuss with your vet whether your dog needs the drug.
Aktivait contains almost exactly the same ingredients as RenewMe Vitality & Cognitive support so I do not advise using both. I recommend sticking with one or the other.

Vitofyllin

Jackie

My dog stated this medicine on Saturday, and he has suddenly started pooping & peeing in the house. He's 13. Is this a side effect of some sort?

  • VioVet Staff

The listed possible side effects for this product as per the datasheet are as follows:

On rare occasions,(more than 1 but less than 10 animals in 10,000
animals treated), allergic skin reactions, vomiting and cardiac
disturbances have been reported. In these cases, the treatment should be
stopped.

Increased defaecation and urination are not listed side effects. I recommend contacting your vet if this is seen as it could be caused by another underlying issue.

Vitofyllin and worming

Cliff Ayre

My dog is taking vitofyllin twice daily, he is due to be wormed, can I give him worming tablet whilst on vitofyllin.

  • VioVet Staff

Worming is not one of the contraindictations for Vitofyllin as per the datasheet. This means it is likely safe to use them both together. However I recommend double checking with the vet that prescribed you Vitofyllin in case there are any other factors to consider.
