45 Cat with Stomatitis/inflamed gums

My veterinarian in California was willing to try this based on research to treat my 13-yr old cat with stomatitis. So far we have only gone through 1 pack (I ordered the 2-pack). She has shown significant improvement and is eating again. He has kept the remaining pack refrigerated in case future treatment is needed. I feel this has been easier than dental extractions, less painful, and less costly.

45 Cat with FIP
Verified Purchase

I was using this product to treat a cat with FIP. I believe if fedex hadn't screwed up, and instead delivered it on time, it might have been more effective. It was to be refrigerated and sent overnight and I received it 3 days late and hot. I had to wait for a second batch to be delivered and VioVet was extremely helpful in this matter. So in a disease where every second counts I was behind the curve. It did seem to help halt some of the progression of the symptoms and I would try it again if the need ever arises.

I bought the whole course (5 packs) for my cat who has Calicivirus - he was vomitting and off his food due to a severely ulcerated mouth - antibiotics only worked temporarily and it was only a matter of time before I had to have him put down. After his first course of 5 injections his mouth is normal and the vomitting has stopped - other reviews I've read say the full course boosts immune system for about 4 years - very happy so far

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Virbagen Omega for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Can this be taken orally?

Ray

Can Interferon Omega be taken orally for stomatitis? Or can it only be used as a course of injections?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet dosing for this medication involves injectable use, however there is research with stomatitis on oral use of the medication with good success. We cannot advise on off license use of the product though so we recommend contacting your vet or the manufacturer for further information.

Virbagen Omega for cat

Claire waddington

Hi I wanted to enquire about dosage, my cat is 3.1 kg.

So am i right in thinking 10ml vial would give me approx 3 treatments on the basis of mixing up the vial with a diluent etc?

So to do the 1 inj per day for 5 days, again at 2 weeks then again at 8, how many vials would i need in total & cost? Confused as on the Q&A it mentions a customer needing 3 vials but as they sell in pairs would need 4, at a total cost of £320.00 (price for 2 is £244.99?)

  • VioVet Staff

The dose according to the datasheet for cats is as follows:
The
reconstituted product should be injected subcutaneously once daily for 5
consecutive days. The dose is 1 MU/kg bodyweight. Three separate 5-day
treatments must be performed at day 0, day 14 and day 60.

Your 3.1kg cat will need 3.1MU per injection and each vial contains 10MU, so yes your cat will need 2 vials per 5 day course. In total for the datasheet course you would need 6 vials.

I recommend discussing the doseage past your vet though, the standard dosing as per the datasheet is not necessarily the most appropriate course for your cat's condition. Your vet can contact Virbac for off license information regarding dosing, for example courses that are oral rather than injectable for stomatitis. They will also need to write you a prescription for this medication.

A curto, médio e longo prazo? Quais os efeitos colaterais? Qual o valor? Fazem entrega em Brasília? Qual a dosagem para ela que está com 3kg e 700 gramas? Esse remédio combate o vírus? Por gentileza, ajudem. Grata

  • VioVet Staff

Virbagen Omega can be used to treat FeLV as it is an anti-viral medication. Your vet will need to provide specific doseages for this product as it needs to be prescribed by them. Unfortunately we cannot dispense this to Brazil as it is a refridgerated medication, we can only deliver this to locations that our couriers can transport to within 24 hours. We use temperature controlled packaging when we ship this product to ensure these temperatures are maintained.
I recommend contact Virbac who manufacture this product direct, they may have a Brazilian branch who can help you further.

Stomatitis

Bev Simpson

Will this help a cat that has had his teeth out because of stomatitis. His gums still seem sore and he sound snotty . Good appetite , has had antibiotics and Metacam .

  • VioVet Staff

This product helps fight viral infections. Stomatitis can be caused by a virus and the medication is intended for use in patients with this disease. I would advise talking to your vet for specific doseages and recommendations as the best methods to treat for Stomatitis using Virgaben Omega are off license.

Cat with flu

Al

My 8 month old maine coon has flu symptoms. He has been treated with interferon at 0.1ml on day 1,4&6 he is 5kgs. He presented with a bacterial infection and at first this responded well to baytril injection he quickly deteriorated when he went on to the tablet form. He has had his antibiotics changed and now the bacterial infection is slowly improving. Is it worth trying interferon again with him after bacterial infection has cleared up and at what dose would we need to use.

  • VioVet Staff

This is difficult to answer by email because there are lots of factors to take into account. Your own vet is in a better position to assess this. However I would say that this interferon product does not always seem to help much in this sort of situation. Microbial culture and sensitivity testing to help with antibiotic choice is an important part of treating the bacterial component and general nursing measures to help with food and fluid intake are also important. I hope things go well.

My cat has leukemia an he is two going on three an he is throwing up an what can I do

Terri

What should I do

  • VioVet Staff

This has to be a question for your own vet, who can properly assess your cat. The Virbagen product might well help, but I am not in a position to be able to advise you. I hope he does well though.

Cost of treatment with this

Dee j

Hi,trying to work out if I can afford to give my cat with wet FIP a chance with this drug, could you give me any idea how much treating a 2kg cat might cost, per treatment or week or month, would be very grateful of any estimate, thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

One 10mu vial contains enough product to treat a 10kg animal. Theoretically this could be 5 treatments for a 2kg cat, but that would mean mixing up the vial with the diluent and then storing the remainder for up to 4 days. Ideally fresh product is mixed up every day, but many vets will use part of a vial and get part or all of a treatment course from 1 vial. The standard treatment course for a cat is one injection per day for 5 days, then a 5 day course repeated again after about 2 weeks, then again at 8 weeks. This means that the cheapest full course for a 2 kg cat would take 3 vials. You have to buy them in pairs and 4 vials would cost about £320. If your vet feels that a fresh vial is needed per day, then that would cost 5 times as much, so you need to check this with your vet.

Feline Leukemia

Luisa Angel

Please I would like to know if the virbac omega will improve the life of a one year old cat that has leukemia? Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

This product is often used for cats like this and the results are variable but there are often signs of improvement with a better quality of life and statistically an increased life expectancy. It is certainly worth trying.
