Description

See the effects of surgical castration with Suprelorin.

Suprelorin is a sustained release implant that contains deslorelin acetate (a GnRH super agonist). It is used in healthy, sexually mature dogs and ferrets that have not been neutered to make them temporarily infertile.

The implant is inserted subcutaneously, under the loose skin on the back between the lower neck and the lumbar area in dogs and between the shoulder blades in ferrets.

  • Suprelorin effects can be seen at about 6 to 8 weeks in dogs and between 5 and 14 weeks in ferrets.

The effect continues for at least 6 months in the case of the 4.7 mg implant for dogs and at least 12 months in the case of the 9.4 mg implant for dogs (16 months for ferrets), after which the dog or ferret can be re-implanted if necessary.

45 Suprelorin for dogs
Verified Purchase

By on 29 November 2023

I bought this product online as recommended by my vet, it was delivered quickly and had to be refrigerated once received. I haven’t noticed any side effects, my dog is only 10months old so is hyper, often naughty/mischievous, so anything he does is hard to pinpoint it being because of the implant. One thing that has abaded is the humping, maybe that is a result of the implant, who knows

45 Saves the lives of Rescue Chickens

It works really well to stop chickens laying. Most rescue chickens get serious reproductive problems such as cancer and peritonitis a year after rescue. Stopping them laying can give them a long and happy life.
Expensive for a chicken....

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Suprelorin Implant for Dogs, including answers from our team.

Dosage for 53kg dog

Nikki Abbott

Is the 4.7mg sufficient for a 53kg dog to last 6 months?

  • VioVet Staff

According to the datasheet, yes. The dose is the same regardless of the size of the dog. A 4.7mg implant lasts 6 months and a 9.4mg implant lasts 12 months.

Implantation

Charlie Barnard

Does this need to be implanted by a Vet? If no, does the pack come with the implanter?

  • VioVet Staff

The product with an implanter however it must be done as per the datasheet guidelines below. In almost all cases this involves administration by a trained professional, such as your vet. You are best discussing this further with them.

Disinfection of the implantation site should be undertaken prior to implantation to avoid introduction of infection. If the hair is long, a small area should be clipped, if required.
Remove Luer Lock cap from the implanter. Attach the actuator to the implanter using the Luer Lock connection.
The product should be implanted subcutaneously in the loose skin on the back between the lower neck and the lumbar area. Avoid injection of the implant into fat, as release of the active substance might be impaired in areas of low vascularisation. Lift the loose skin between the shoulder blades. Insert the entire length of the needle subcutaneously. Fully depress the actuator plunger and, at the same time, slowly withdraw the needle. Press the skin at the insertion site as the needle is withdrawn, and maintain pressure for 30 seconds. Examine the syringe and needle to ascertain that the implant has not remained within the syringe or needle, and that the spacer is visible. It may be possible to palpate the implant in situ.

Do I need a prescription to purchase?
I am interested in seeing if this affects the aggression my dog is starting to show

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this is a prescription only medication and so you will need a written prescription from your vet to purchase it with us. More information can be found below:

Conditions to be kept in

Sarah

Hi,
I spotted someone else's question and response about the shelf life of the implants. You seem to have a 'temperature controlled' label on the webpage - can you tell me what conditions these implants need to be kept in if they are to have a shelf life of 2 years?
Also, is the effectiveness the same over the timespan of the shelf life or will the implant become less effectiive over time? For example, if I were to use one implant now and another in a years time, will the effectiveness of both implants be the same despite the age difference?
Many thanks,
Sarah

  • VioVet Staff

These implants need to be stored at refridgerated temperatures (between 2C and 8C). They will not degrate over time whilst in date and will be suitable for use right up to to the expiry date stated on the medication itself, as long as the storage requirements are met.
We stock medications direct from licensed wholesalers which means we cannot predict expiry dates unfortunately, as we do not manufacture the product. We therefore can only guarantee expiry dates of up to 6 months from the date of dispatch. If you wish to order medication for use in a years time then it is likely the expiry date will be beyond this, but we unfortuantely cannot guarantee it or refund for any unused medication beyond 6 months from the date of dispatch.

Surgical castration

Emma

How long do you have to wait to get the dogs surgically castrated after having the 6 month implant? He's only 3.4kg and he's had the implant just over 6 month, his testicles appear to be starting to get bigger , so I'm assuming it's wearing off.

  • VioVet Staff

It is best to ask this question to your vet who will perform the surgery. There are no contraindications in the datasheet to suggest castration should be delayed or avoided when an implant is present.

can I buy a single implant of supre Lorin ? why are they sold in packs of 2 when you only have 1 pet.

  • VioVet Staff

The manufacturer produces this medication in packs of two so unfortunately they can only be purchased in this form. I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Suprelirin

Mr David A Sherwood

How long should suprelorin implant last in cats.

  • VioVet Staff

The use of Suprelorin in cats is off license so unfortunately we cannot advise on this for you. I recommend discussing this with your vet who will be able to advise.

Implant dose

Dee

The data sheet states 1 implant per dog regardless of the size of the dog so why does the implant come in 2 different dose sizes?

  • VioVet Staff

The different sizes determine how long the effects are seen for. The 4.7mg implant is only licensed for dogs and lasts for 6 months whilst the 9.4mg is licensed for dogs and ferrets, in dogs the effects last up to 12 months and in ferrets 4 years.

Interest

Kat

Hello, my entire male dog has had the suprelorin injection 8 weeks ago. My bitch has just come into season. He is now very interested in her and has tried to mount her but I jumped in and moved him away. Is the injection 100% effective at stoping him being fertile? I don’t want any puppies! Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

Infertility is achieved from 6 weeks up to at least 6 months after initial treatment. Treated dogs should therefore still be kept away from bitches in heat within the first 6 weeks following initial treatment. Rarely, matings may occur during the 6 months but no pregnancy results. Any mating that occurs more than 6 months after the administration of the product may result in pregnancy. However, it is not necessary to keep bitches away from treated dogs following subsequent implantations, provided that the product is administered every 6 months.

Humping in dogs

Gill

Hi if a dog has the implant does it stop it humping? Mine have had the implant in for 3 weeks now but they still want to hump & chase bitches that are in season

  • VioVet Staff

Over time this behaviour may stop as it can take 6 weeks for Suprelorin to be fully effective. However for some dogs this is now a learned behaviour and whilst the Suprelorin will be working to induce temporary infertility in your dogs the behaviour may or may not change.
