Broad spectrum wormer for donkey’’s

Rebecca anne calder

Hi there
Please could you recommend a broad spectrum wormer for donkey that
Could possibly be in-foal
(Just taken delivery of this poor donkey no mention of bring in-foal)
She is just a strange shape not a typical wormy belly
Your advice please
Regards

Strongid-P is safe for use in pregnant donkeys and is a good choice. At the standard dose rate it will treat the most common types of worms, at a double dose it will also cover tapeworms. It will not cover encysted redworm however this is a winter only issue so you do not need to worry about this yet.

Lungworm

Loki

Does this treat lungworm in horses and donkeys?

  • VioVet Staff

Strongid-P contains Pyrantel which is not advised for treating lungworm. If you wish to treat lungworm in both horses and donkeys then Eqvalan (containing ivermectin) is licensed and suitable.

Wormer advice redworm

Sarah Robinson

Hi

I need help on which wormer will be effective against red worm other than equest pramox.

  • VioVet Staff

Strongid-P contains pyrantel which is effective against adult redworm. So are other wormers including ivermectin and fenbendazole, which includes most horse worming products.
You may be thinking of encysted redworm which is part of the redworms life cycle in the winter months. Only moxidectin (Equest/Equest Pramox) and a 5 day course of fenbendazole (Panacur) will treat this. However it is currently summer so this is not an issue.

I recommend reading our 'Quick Guide to Horse Worming' for further information.

Just checking, if worming for tapeworm this needs to be given at a double dose. For example if a horse is 500kg in weight I need to worm for 1000kg?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, the dose for tapeworm is double the normal dose. So if your horse weighs 500kg then you should dose for a 1000kg horse to cover tapeworm. You will need 2 syringes for this.

November wormers

Col

Will this wormer kill tape worm and red worm
Is this the one I need for this month

  • VioVet Staff

It is recommended to use a wormer that will treat encysted redworm during the winter months. Equest/Equest Pramox or a 5 day course of Panacur will treat this. If you are worried about tapeworms then Equest Pramox is your best choice.
Strongid-P contains Pyrantel which is a great wormer and can be used to treat most worms at the normal dose and tapeworms at a double dose, however it will not cover encysted redworm so is not ideal for the winter.

I strongly advise reading our blog 'A Quick Guide To Horse Worming' for a summary of how and when to worm your horse. It's important to test before just worming anyway and to have a good plan in place for the year.

Tapeworm

Clare

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Cumbria, United Kingdom

Will this wormer get rid of tapeworm?

  • VioVet Staff

This wormer will treat tapeworms if used at double the normal strength, as explained by the data sheet exert below:

Dosage: For the control and treatment of tapeworms: Strongid-P Paste
should be used at a dose rate of 38 mg pyrantel embonate per kg
bodyweight, that is twice the dose rate for strongyles.

Worming Mare and Foal

Bridget

  • VioVet customer since 2015
  • From: Cornwall, United Kingdom

How do I worm a lactating mare with a one month old foal with Strongid-P? Do both mare and foal get a dose each or if I give the mare a dose, will the foal receive some through the mare's milk?

  • VioVet Staff

You will need to dose the mare and foal separately according to their bodyweight. It is safe to give foals Strongid P from 4 weeks of age.

Pinworm

Caroline booth

My horse is suffering with pinworm I have used Strongid p thelast two times as I find this expels them the best last time was a double dose in mid October can I do it again or should I use something else x I really need to try eradicate them they drive her mad xx

  • VioVet Staff

A Pyrantel based wormer such as Strongid P or Pyratape P is the best thing to use so you are doing the right thing. I would double dose with either one of these at 2 weekly intervals until you have eradicated the pinworm. Cleaning around her bottom daily will remove eggs laid by the adult worms overnight. You could also speak to your vet about an ivermectin and propylene glycol wash to apply around the bottom also.

Threadworm

suez

Which is the most effective wormer against threadworm?

  • VioVet Staff

If you mean the neck threadworm (Onchocerca spp.) then Eqvalan is licensed to treat them and would be the usual choice. It is also theoretically helpful to try and reduce midges biting your horse, as they are responsible for transmitting this parasite. Good fly repellents based on a high concentration of DEET are probably the best. NAF Off DEET Power is a good example.
