Selgian is used to treat behavioural disorders in dogs which are associated with emotional upset, such as depression or anxiety. Ideally it is used alongside behaviour therapy when it is able to improve signs such as overactivity, phobias and anti-social behaviour. Selgian can also help dogs which have difficulty coping with periodic separation from their owners. Problems such as inappropriate urination or destructiveness when left alone can be improved. Selgian Tablets are given once daily for at least 2 months. The average treatment period is about 4 or 5 months, but can be longer. When required, it is acceptable to stop the medication suddenly, without a gradual withdrawal.

This took about 12 days to work. My dog was a lot calmer and stopped barking at night. She was 17 and her back legs were going. If she fell she would bark to be helped up. It seemed to help with her incontinence at first also , maybe because she was more aware she was going to need to wee. She interacted with us again . I would recommend this for an old dog.

My vet prescribed Selgian for Jay as he had a number of behavioural problems which was put down to doggy dementia ( he is 13 and a springer spaniel). It has eased some of his anxiety issues, although not all of them and is much cheaper to buy from viovet ( with an online prescription) than from my vets

Can you give prednisolone while taking selgian
Corticosteroids such as prednisolone are not listed as medications that will react with Selgian on the datasheet. It is a prescription only medication so you should discuss this with your vet though to be certain.
Max aged 13 cavalier.
My dog has mild epilepsy which is controlled by Pexion. He also has 1/4 of metrobactin. I have a prescription for selgain 5ml. Is this ok?
I strongly advise discussing this with your prescribing vet. Behaviour modifying drugs like this can have an impact on neurological disorders like epilepsy, your prescribing vet will be aware of this though and very likely will have ensured it is safe to give. They will be in the best position to advise on this.

Is Selgian safe to use with Vitofyllin and aktivait?
Yes Selgian is safe to use alongside Vitofyllin and Aktivait. The drug should not be used just before or during anaesthesia/sedation, or with other behaviour modifying drugs. However the medications you have listed do not qualify as either of these.

My elderly dog has been on Selgian now for over 2 weeks for ccd. Can the side effects make her stumble more and lose control of her back legs to a certain extent? I’m becoming worried about the side effects as I’m unsure whether the tablets are going to be any help and was thinking maybe it is best to stop them.
This is not a side effect usually seen with Selgian. That said there is always potential for a dog to react in any way to a given drug. The only way to know would be to stop the Selgian and see if she improves. However you should speak to your own vet first before stopping treatment and it would be a good idea for them to have a look at your dog to rule out any other underlying causes for her symptoms.

I have a 16 year old Jack Russell terrier who has begun to show signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction, he is quiet in the day and sleeps without issue, but at night he barks endlessly until I come down to him (he can't walk up the stairs so he sleeps downstairs), he also paces around his sleeping space constantly, getting in his basket, instantly getting back out, pacing, then repeat. We have been recommended Selgian, and as our dog is approximately 12KG in weight, it was advised that he takes one 10mg tablet per day, but I have read on several websites that the recommended dosage is 0.5mg per KG, which would put the dosage for his weight at 6mg per day, not 10mg. Would you recommend that he takes a 10mg tablet per day, or half a tablet as per the dosage recommendations online, as the tablets are very expensive and I would prefer 30 tablets to last 2 months not just 1. It may have been recommend that he takes the full 10mg per day because his behaviour at night (or when left alone) is quite severe and half a tablet may be ineffective.
Many thanks.
You are right that the recommended dose is half a tablet daily for your dogs weight. However as you say his behaviour is quite severe and the bigger dose may be more helpful. You certainly won't overdose. You could try giving half a tablet daily and see what response you get on this dose. If it is not effective enough you can go up to 1 tablet daily.

What side effects can there be from selgian 10mg tablets for dogs?
Studies have shown that Selgian caused transient minor gastrointestinal irritation, e.g. salivation/ vomiting in 15/15000 administrations. It is also not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating bitches as it may interact with Prolactin and milk production.

my american akita weighs 50kilos. he is 18mths old and fit.how much dosage will he need to help him chill out around people. thanks
The correct dose for your dog would be one and a quarter tablets daily. Ideally you should follow advice from a dog behaviour therapist at the same time, so as to get the maximum benefit from the tablets. He should become more receptive to being "trained" to improve, rather than hoping the tablets will do it all by themselves. (They might do, as long as you and the people he meets are able to respond appropriately to him. He needs to pick up the right signals from all of you to get the best benefit.)
