Science Supplements ProKalm for Horses

If you have tried multiple types of calmers but have not had much success then I suggest seeking behavioural training for the anxiety. Calmers don't treat the underlying fear, they will cover the signs of it and usually only work well for mild/moderate anxieties.
If you have not tried ProKalm before though then it is one of the best in the range and is worth using. It is safe for use in the long term. Based on the ingredient list it should be safe for use alongside In The Pink Powder. A 1.1kg pouch gives approximately 5 weeks supply.

At 17hh your horse will be over 500kg, possibly nearing 700-750kg. I recommend following the 500kg dosing initially and working out a more accurate weight when you can, then you can increase the dose if needed. The feeding guidelines are pasted below:

• Pony (250kg) : 1-3 scoops per day
• Horse (500kg) : 2-4 scoops per day
• Large Horse (750kg+) : 2-6 scoops per day

For
a strong calming effect, e.g. to clip, shoe, box or when first turning
out, give 2-4 scoops for a 500kg horses in feed or mix with a little
water and syringe around 1-2h before peak effect is required. For a
mild-moderate calming effect , e.g. for riding, travelling, etc give 1-2
scoops for a 500kg horse in feed or mix with a little water and syringe
around 1-2h before peak effect is required. For sustained calming over
time, for anxious horses or those with vices e.g. cribbing, give 0.5 to 2
scoops for a 500kg horse in both morning and evening feeds for at least
7 days. For first time use we strongly recommend feeding 2 x 25ml
scoops per day split between morning and evening feed for a 500kg horse.
If the effect is too strong then reduce the rate.
If after 1-2
days the effect is not strong enough then increase to 4 x 25ml scoops
per day and up to 6 x 25ml scoops per day after a further 1-2 days.

Here is the feeding information for the powder formulation:

And for the syringe formulation:

Use either half a syringe or a full syringe 1-2 hours before the desired effect. ProKalm is best given in feed on a regular basis - The effects of a single quantity can begin within 30 minutes and last for up to 8 hours - The amount given can be varied to get the desired effect and some horses require higher quantities than others. For a strong calming effect, e.g. to clip, shoe, box or when first turning out, for a mild-moderate calming effect , e.g. for riding, travelling, etc and for sustained calming over time or for anxious horses or those with vices e.g. cribbing, we strongly recommend feeding ProKalm powder as a daily feed.

In short, you can feed just when needed or as a daily supplement.

To get the best effect from the product you should aim to give her the recommended dose twice a day. The second dose only needs to be in a small handful of chaff or you could mix it with water and syringe it if you do not want to give her another feed. However, giving her the powder once a day for a few days before moving her is better than nothing at all. If she is a stressy horse prone to ulcers then yes it would be a good idea to give this supplement ongoing as part of her daily feed.

It is perfectly safe to give this supplement to your filly and is certainly worth a try. However if she does become that distressed you may find it is not strong enough. Separation anxiety can be very difficult to deal with in horses. You should start by taking the other horse away for a while where she can still see it, then taking the other horse out of sight for a short period of time and giving her a small feed so that she is distracted and eventually comes to associate the other horse going away with something good. Gradually increase the length of time the other horse is taken away to the point where you can go out for a ride. You may find that giving something stronger like sedalin from your vet will be very helpful to keep her relaxed whilst you are doing the training.

You can give this just for a few days if that is all you need to do. You could start with 2 scoops twice daily and then increase or decrease this dose if needed according to effect. Do give it on the day of competition too.

For a Shetland Pony I would try two scoops per day. This can safely be increased to 3 per day if you need to. If it is working well, you could reduce to one scoop per day after a week or so.
