Kidney disease

Buddys Mum

Can this be used for dogs with Kidney disease? are the ingredients suitable?

  • VioVet Staff

If your dog is on a special diet for the kidney disease then any change to this, including the addition of a supplement, can reduce it's effectiveness. It is advised you chat this through with your vet to make sure it is suitable for your dog.

Wind problem

Dog trainer

My 9 month old Labrador has a problem with wind which is very offensive smell he is on a good dry kibble food and Protexin Pro-Biotic supplement,I was wondering if Pro Plan Fortiflora would help? Many people thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

Probiotic gut supplements can help with flatulence. If you are already on the Protexin version then it is unlikely you will see a significant change on the Pro Plan version.
Flatulence is also based on diet and so you may wish to approach this too.

How many sachets per weight of the dog per day

Alison

How many sachets per day should I give my 26kg Labrador?

He’s suffers from severe IBS and multiple skin issues. He is on Royal Canin Sensitivity Control can food.

Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The dose is not dependant on the weight, it is as follows:

One sachet of PRO PLAN FortiFlora can be used daily on a long-term basis. Give 1 sachet of PRO PLAN FortiFlora every day, sprinkled on top of the regular food, until at least 1 week after the return to normal stool quality. To reduce flatulence in dogs, give 1 sachet of PRO PLAN FortiFlora every day for at least 2 weeks.
To help support immune system function, give 1 sachet of PRO PLAN FortiFlora every day. When feeding to restore intestinal microflora balance due to antibiotic use, give 1 sachet of PRO PLAN FortiFlora every day during the antibiotic course and for 1 week after the last dose of antibiotic. Ideally, PRO PLAN Fortiflora should be given at least 2 hours apart from any antibiotics.

Spreading over all meals

Kirsty

My dog is fed 3 times a day, due to EPI, can I spread one sachet over the 3meals or should it all be given in one go? He is obviously having smaller meals as he is on 3 meals a day instead of 2 so approx 60/70g per meal. Just worried all that powder on a meal so small might be too much

  • VioVet Staff

These probiotic sachets can be given once daily in one of the three meals. It will still have the same effect comapred to splitting it 3 times daily.
It is important that you give the enzyme supplement you are giving alongside this with each meal though. The enzyme supplement (whichever your vet has advised) must be present in each meal that is fed as the enzymes are required to break down the feed.

Use of FlortiFlora Dog Probiotic Sachet

Sandra Mullett

My dog has been diagnosed with DCM and is on heart medication and diaretics. Would be be safe to give him this as his eating habits have changed and he has very loose bowel movements. I don't want to give him anything which will interfere with his heart medication.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes these probiotic sachets are safe to use alongside heart disease and heart medications. I recommend running any supplement/dietary changes past your vet though to ensure it does not interfere with their treatment plan.

Colitis and forti flora

15 yr old dog with regular episodes of diarrhoea.tried promax and regutum, she does not like regutums taste.will fortiflora help and should it be used every day?

  • VioVet Staff

Both Reugutum and Fortiflora are probiotic supplements which can help settle scavenging/dietary/stress related diarrhoea. If you have tried one or two types of probiotic and not seen any improvement then I would advise seeing your vet as their could be another cause to the diarrhoea.
You can use Fortiflora every day if it works well for your dog.

Is this product designed for dogs with very loose stools.

Louise

Tilly is a Romanian rescue and had para as a puppy and I understand that this can leave problems with the digestive track. She is not a greedy dog at all and often does not eat all her food. Just need confirmation that this is the right product for her, thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this probiotic supplement is intended for use in animals suffering from digestive upsets, such as diarrhoea. It can help treat and prevent these problems as it promotes normal intestinal health.

Weight of dog to amount given?

Natasha

My Vet has recommend this for my dog who has been diagnosed with Possible inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Gastric issues so she's sick often a diet change to Eukanuba Dermatosis FP Veterinary Diets which has helped a lot less sick nearly 2 months clear no sick but the other day was sick Vet Advises I add this once a day my dog gets her food split 3 times in the day as she's a small dog weight about 5kg should i give this on her morning feed or night feed and do you recommend half a Sachet a day on one meal?

  • VioVet Staff

I think your vet's advice is very good. That particular diet is often very effective and this supplement is good too. I would give the Fotiflora just once per day, there is no need to do it more than that. It is usual to give a whole sachet once daily even to small dogs so personally I would do that.

Length of course

Tracy

How long can this be given to an elderly dog of 15 with loose stools

  • VioVet Staff

This product is usually given on the basis of controlling the presenting symptoms. It is used when the performance of the digestion is questionable, such as when the stools are loose. If the stools improve after using the product, then it is possible to keep using it to maintain the effect, or stop and see if it is no longer needed. Sometimes Fortiflora will have "cured" an underlying problem/imbalance, other times it just tends to tip the balance the way we want while and for as long as it is being given. There is no hard and fast rule on this and luckily there is no harm from stopping and starting dosing. It is safe to use life-long and this is sometimes helpful. Shorter courses, or intermittent courses as required, are equally acceptable. You should provide treatment "to effect".
