Is it only for dogs with seizures? Purina NC

Joachim Friz

  • VioVet customer since 2022
  • From: ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates

I have two dogs that eat together. One of my dog has been diagnosed with idiopathic seizures. We were told to order the Purina NC NeuroCare. Both my dogs share their food. Do we have to separate their food now or can my non seizure dog also eat the Purina NC? Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Pro Plan Neurocare NC will be fine to feed to both dogs, as long as the other dog is an adult, not currently pregnant or lactation, or have specific medical needs that require a low fat or low protein diet.

What percentage carbohydrates are in Purina neurocare

G and J Kneen

Ketogenic diets for treatment of epilepsy are low carb
I have calculated that the neurocare is33% approx carbohydrate so won’t control seizures have you any evidence?

  • VioVet Staff

NeuroCare has been produced alongside a study by the Royal Veterinary College, I recommend reading their research paper for more information regarding it's efficacy. A link to this is provided here.

I have a epileptic dog who has 1 fit every 3 months hes not on medication because they only last 2 min max .
Has anyone tried this on it's own

  • VioVet Staff

This diet is specially formulated to help reduce seizure frequency when fed as an adjunct to veterinary therapy. It is a veterinary diet so you should check your vet advises it is safe to use before switching your pet onto it. Below is an exert from the RVC website regarding the research backing the diet's effects:

The team at the RVC demonstrated this in a study that showed a diet rich
in medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) can help control seizures
1.
The study was a six-month randomised, placebo-controlled,
double-blinded crossover study conducted in dogs with idiopathic
epilepsy that were also being administered AEDs. It demonstrated for the
first time that a test diet with MCT oil can have positive effects on
reduction of seizure frequency when fed as an adjunct to veterinary
therapy (71% of dogs showed a reduction in seizure frequency, 48% of
dogs showed a 50% or greater reduction in seizure frequency and 14% of
dogs achieved complete seizure freedom).

Unfortunately I cannot find any specific data regarding the use of the diet on it's own. Purina or your vet may be able to advise on this.

Suitable for Puppies?

Rhiannon Price

My springer spaniel puppy is 7 months old and suffers with epilepsy, am I able to feed this to her? If so, how much should I feed her?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this food is suitable for puppies as well as adult dogs. It is a veterinary diet so you should run it's use past your vet first to make sure it is suitable. The puppy feeding instructions are pasted below:

throughout the day. The food intake required to maintain ideal body
condition may vary depending on age, activity and environment.

Which one to feed

Geoffrey Thompson

Which one is most suitable for my dog who suffers seizures with epilepsy. Vet as advised us to go on this food for him but not sure which one to buy .
Can you advise please.

  • VioVet Staff

The Purina Pro Plan NeuroCare (NC) diet is the perfect one for your epileptic dog, this is it's intended use. Research performed by the Royal Veterinary College demonstrated that diets rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) can reduce seizure frequency. The NeuroCare diet was specifically formulated with this in mind. It is important to keep up your dog's normal seizure treatment plan and medications though. You should chat to your vet before changing the doseage or starting any new diets like this.

Size of kibble

Georgina

I have been recommended Purina Pro Plan NC for my 1Kilo weight Chihuahua who has epilepsy. Can you please advise the size of the kibble as she has tiny teeth and missing teeth. She needs very small kibble.

Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Hello,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The kibble is roughly the size of a 20 pence coin.

I hope that helps,

Kellie.
