Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Pharmaq Ivermectin Spot-On Drops, including answers from our team.

Hens

Meg

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Merseyside, United Kingdom

Which product do you recommend for hens? They’re ex-commercial layers. Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Pharmaq drops are safe to use on birds however the datasheet states it should not be used in animals in the human food chain (e.g. eggs or meat). Therefore you should not use them if you are eating the eggs, and you can never eat the eggs again if you use it.
If your hens are ex-commercial layers then this is not suitable. I recommend using Flubendazole 1% or Flubenvet if you wish to worm your birds, these are safe for use in laying hens. If you need to treat for external parasites then please get in touch at [email protected], we can suggest some appropriate options depending on the cause.

1% Small Animal vs 1% Large Ornamental Birds

Jaime

Are the contents and concentrations of the 1% Small Animal and 1% Large Ornamental Birds the same, but simply varying in quantity (5ml and 10ml)?

  • VioVet Staff

These both contain the same concentration of ivermectin (10mg/ml) however they are licensed differently. This means we cannot advise using the Large Ornamental Bird version on a Small Animal as it would be an off license use of the medication. If you wish to do this you will need to discuss it further with your vet and we would need a written prescription from them for you to purchase it from us.
If you are in need of alternate brand suggestions then please get in touch so we can advise at [email protected].

Is the solution in the 1ml bottle same as the 10ml?

Phoebe Sharp

  • VioVet customer since 2021
  • From: Devon, United Kingdom

I have two medium sized 2.5kg rabbits and I bought the 10ml bottle as the 1ml was out of stock, however the label only mentions large birds. Is it the same formulation as the 1ml bottle, which does state safe usage for rabbits?

  • VioVet Staff

The 10ml bottle is not licensed in rabbits and therefore any use of it on rabbits should be alongside veterinary advice. We unfortunately cannot give off label advice on the medications we stock, only the veterinarian that your animals are under the care of can provide this.
If you need an ivermectin spot on for your rabbits and the Pharmaq version is out of stock then it is recommended to use an alternate brand, such as the Beaphar Anti-Parasite Spot On for rabbits.

Dosage

Lindsay

How many drops would you give to young guinea pigs in-between the 500g and 1000g thresholds? I have one that weighs 525g and one that weighs 675g.

  • VioVet Staff

The dose of the 1% solution is 1 drop per 500g. As your guinea pigs are closer to the 500g weight and the 1000g dose would be quite an overdose, it is advised to use 1 drop for dosing.

How many drops in 10ml bottle

Sunny

Can you please inform me as to how many drops are contained in a 10ml bottle of Pharmaq Ivermectin Spot-On Drops.

  • VioVet Staff

One drop is roughly 0.05ml of the medication. This means there are around 200 drops in a 10ml bottle.

Demodex

Mick

Does this treat demodex in small to medium size dogs?

  • VioVet Staff

This product is not licensed for use in dogs. I recommend ordering a dog licensed product. Unfortunately no over the counter products are licensed to treat demodex mites in dogs, however your vet can write you a prescription to purchase appropriate mite treatments from our website. I advise discussing this with them.

Can this be used on pregnant and nursing does

Andy Bowes

  • VioVet customer since 2009
  • From: Essex, United Kingdom

Can this be used on both pregnant and nursing does. ? thankyou

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Andy,

Unfortunately there is no data showing whether this product is safe for use in pregnant and lactating does, and the manufacturer recommends that it is not used during pregnancy/lactation.

If you can confirm what parasites you need to treat (internal such as worms, or external like mites), we will try to recommend an alternative for you. Alternatively, your vet will be able to tell you which they think is best for your doe.

How often should I use Ivermectin

Mandy Pilling

  • VioVet customer since 2012
  • From: Lancashire, United Kingdom

How often should I apply Ivermectin as a preventive method?

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on the level of risk which will vary from one location to another. Many people do not use anything like this at all unless there is a new reason to. More usually people will look for signs of trouble and then treat accordingly at the first signs.

Egg withdrawal.

Frances Girling

  • VioVet customer since 2015
  • From: Devon, United Kingdom

I have a chicken with a bad infestation of lice. I was considering using ivermectin spot on to treat it. I want to know what length of egg withdrawal I should use if I treat all the birds.

  • VioVet Staff

Unfortunately, there isn't an ivermectin based product licensed for use in chickens, so in order for us to be allowed to supply it, you would need to speak to your vet and ask for a prescription. Your vet would be able to advise you of a suitable withdrawal time for the product but the eggs shouldn't be sold or given away to friends.

If you wanted to try a product approved for use in chickens first, Johnsons Poultry Mites & Lice Powder would be a good place to start. This can be used on the chickens and the coop, and you can continue to eat the eggs after and throughout treatment if you wish.
