Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Panacur Liquid Cat & Dog Wormer, including answers from our team.

EH

How long does it take for panacur to have an effect at for the symptoms to go?

  • VioVet Staff

After the administration of Panacur to your dog or puppy, the medicine works very quickly. Normally the drug takes effect within one or two days after application but to notice visible effects you can wait for at least two weeks. After one month from the treatment of your pet, most of the parasites will be dead.

Worming 22kg dog with liquid or paste, quantity

Oli

Dog will not take drontal bone tablets for worming, even ground up. Looking for a suspension to squirt into his mouth but what is the correct dosage

  • VioVet Staff

The adult worming dose as per the datasheet is 1ml per 1 kg body weight as a single oral dose. Therefore your 22kg dog will need 22mls.
It is worth noting that only tabletable wormers will cover tapeworm too, unfortunately Panacur only covers roundworms. I recommend persisting with a combination worming tablet like Drontal or TermaWorm where possible.

Dosage for 6 Kg dog?

Michelle Connors

What is the dosage for a 6KG Moodle?
He is very reluctant regarding medication. To administer it can this product be mixed with a small amount of canned dog food?

  • VioVet Staff

For routine adult worming this is dosed at 1ml per 1kg as a one off dose. Therefore your dog will need 6mls of the product. If you need a liquid/paste wormer then you may wish to use Panacur Paste in this instance as it'll be easier to administer.

It is worth noting that Panacur only covers roundworms. If you wish to worm for roundworms and tapeworms then it is advised to use a combination wormer, like TermaWorm. This can be crushed into the food if needed.

Puppy worming regime

Colette

Hello, my bitch has had a surprise litter and she therefore wasn't dewormed when she was pregnant. The vet has therefore advised a five day worming treatment for the puppies and her. They are 3 weeks old now. I'm just slightly worried that a five day treatment is a little bit too much for them if they are going to be dewormed in two weeks time again. I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you very much,

Colette

  • VioVet Staff

I recommend following your vets advice primarily on this, they will have advised this for a specific reason.
Panacur is dosed as a 3 day course for puppies according to the datasheet. Our standard advise is to follow this, dosing at 2, 5, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of age. From 8 weeks of age when your pups are weaned you can switch onto wormiing tablets instead (such as TermaWorm). These are dosed once rather than over 3 days and are usually easier to administer as they are palatable.

Is it safe while on other meds

warren a

can this product be used while a dog is taking prednisone (steroid) and destolit ?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for Panacur states that there are no known interactions. It therefore should be safe for use alongside prednisolone and destolit. It is worth running this past your vet though as they will be aware of the condition your dog has to, which may affect the use of the drug.

Tape worm?

Vanessa Hales

The description says that this is effective against round worm and intestinal parasites. Do you know if it is effective against tape, whip and hook worms please. I currently use a brand for my dogs that protects against ALL worms but it is not suitable for puppies.

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur will cover roundworms, including hookworms and whipworms. It will not cover tapeworm or the most common cause of canine lungworm. If you would like further worming advice please get in touch at [email protected].

MONICA TOBIAS-GAY

Does the Panacur come with a dropper, so that the liquid can be put into the dogs mouth, and what is the dosage for a healthy 9 year old cross corgi bitch ?

  • VioVet Staff

The medication comes with a measuring cup so that the correct amount can be dosed to your dog. The correct dose depends on the weight of your dog. You may find that the adult dose will be a lot of liquid for your pet and a combination worming tablet crushed into the feed, such as TermaWorm, is easier for routine adult worming.
Please get in touch at [email protected] if you would like further advice.

Adult dog dosage

Claire

What’s the frequency of the dosage for a 10 month old dog just as a routine worming?

  • VioVet Staff

It is usually advised to go onto standard adult worming rates at this age. Worming is recommended once every 3 months for the average pet. if your dog is a known scavenger and in a household with vulnerable individuals (e.g. young, elderly, immunocomprimised) then once monthly is recommended.
You may wish to use combination wormers such as TermaWorm for this as they also cover tapeworm as well as roundworm.

How much would I give a 2 stone dog?

Alison

How much would I give a 2 stone dog? She is coming up to 1 year old soon. Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

2 stone is approximately 12.7kg. If worming at the standard adult dose rate your dog will need 1 x Panacur 4.5g (red) sachet and 1 x Panacur 1.8g (blue) sachet combined for one dose.

Does this prevent lungworm?

Pauline Green

Does this prevent uk lungworm in dogs?

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur can be used to treat domestic dogs infected with lungworm Oslerus (Filaroides) osleri. This is NOT the most common cause of lungworm disease in dogs though, which is caused by Angiostrongylus Vasorum. If you wish to prevent Canine lungworm then you will need to use a prescription wormer containing either moxidectin or milbemycin.
