Description

Panacur is a widely used and very popular broad spectrum wormer. Using the highly active Fenbendazole, Panacur treats and controls migrating larval and adult stages of all main species of Roundworms, in addition to destroying worm eggs. Given as a single dose or over five days for best results against migrating and encysted larvae, Panacur offers reliable results and is available in an unflavoured paste form. POM-VPS.

The presence of worms can be checked in your horse using a Worm Testing Kit.

Bought this after a worm count showed my horse needed worming. Sheā€™s difficult to worm generally but doesnā€™t mind wormers with flavouring added as much and accepted this one without a battle! I also found the syringe easy to use, the size was ideal for my hands and easy to set right amount. Did think it was quite expensive for one of the ā€˜simpleā€™ wormers thoā€™.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Panacur Wormer for Horses and Donkeys, including answers from our team.

Missed dose

VioVet Visitor

Giving the 5 day course, been giving it 24 hours apart. Heā€™s had 4 doses, each 24 hours apart, but life intervened and Iā€™m going to be a couple of hours late up the yard. Is this a problem ? What should I do

  • VioVet Staff

If you are performing the 5 day course and a dose is missed then officially this is outside of the licensing as per the datasheet. We therefore unfortunately cannot advise whether this will have been effective or not.
Theoretically though, missing one day accidentally and then carrying out this dose 1 day late (for example 3 days of dosing, 1 day off, then 2 days of dosing) is unlikely to make a significant difference. In this instance I recommend just continuing the daily dosing until 5 days in total has been dosed. I cannot say for certain though that this will provide an adequate dose course.

Roundworm

Caitlin

I have found roundworms in my horses poo today (only purchased 2 weeks ago). They was 2 and they are approx 2 inches long - would I be better giving a paste or giving a 5 day course of panacur?

Asking as to avoid colic if possible if the mare has too many worms

  • VioVet Staff

I recommend reading our blog on worming. The correct wormer to use and when depends on the season. It is also always best to test for worms rather than just worm anyway. A link to this blog can be found here.

Is it harmful to dogs

Jo

I have a puppy who sadly tries to eat the pony droppingsā€¦would panacur in the droppings harm her?

  • VioVet Staff

The dose given to horses is far greater than that of dogs. Whilst Panacur is safe for use in dogs and so it is unlikely this could cause an issue, it is strongly advised to prevent them eating the droppings after dosing in case what they ingest is a significant overdose.

It is advised to prevent your pup eating horse feaces anyway as certain parasites can be ingested when doing this.

Foal dose

Emma

Hello. I'm looking to buy the panacure paste for a foal we are getting later this month. What dose would I use? She's a section A foal so unsure what weight she will be until I can weight tape her when she arrives. Would one tube of paste be enough for the 5 day course?

  • VioVet Staff

The foal dose is as follows according to the datasheet:
Routine treatment: Administer orally, 1 Syringe per 600 kg bodyweight
One syringe will be enough for this.

If you wish to carry out the 5 day course then you will need to give this same dose but once daily for 5 days:
For the treatment and control of migrating and tissue larval stages of large strongyles, encysted mucosal 3rd and 4th stage small strongyle larvae and encysted inhibited 3rd stage small strongyle larvae in the mucosa, administer 1 syringe per 600 kg bodyweight daily for 5 days.
However this is likely unecessary as it is not the correct season to treat for encysted strongyles (these need covering in Winter). If you still wish to do the above then the number of syringes you need will depend on the weight of the foal. If 100kg or less then this will be fine, if 200kg then you will need 2 syringes etc.

It may be best to wait untuil you have the foal to weigh before ordering. If you wish to treat routienly though then one syringe should be fine. The syringe is graduated so you can dose for the exact weight, you should not give the entire syringe unless your horse is 600kg.

Can the paste be used over 5 days?

Horse sensitive to wormers

My horse is very sensitive to some wormers [colic, severe illness and loss of appetite etc.] She has always been fine on the 5 day guard, but now won't eat it. I've tried both flavours. Can I use the paste but split into 5 days or do I have to try to thicken the 5 day guard to enable syringing? Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, according to the datasheet you can use the syringe paste for the 5 day course. The datasheet for this states the following:
Five day course:
For the treatment and control of migrating and tissue larval stages of large strongyles, encysted mucosal 3rd and 4th stage small strongyle larvae and encysted inhibited 3rd stage small strongyle larvae in the mucosa, administer 1 syringe per 600 kg bodyweight daily for 5 days.

This is however is the same strength per dose as the single treatment (7.5mg/kg). The datasheet for the Panacur Guard actually advises this same dose of 7.5mg/kg for the 5 day course. I therefore recommend just using the single dose treatment of the paste if you are just looking to worm routinely, this is the same dose as what you have been doing each day with the Panacur Guard.

Worming a Foal

Carol

At what age can I worm my foal with Panacur

  • VioVet Staff

There is no minimum age for the use of Panacur in a foal. It is usually advised to start worming at one month old and Panacur is one of the recommended products to do this with.

Goats

Molly Rodwell

  • VioVet customer since 2019
  • From: Norfolk, United Kingdom

Can this be used for Pygmy goats ?

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur Guard and 24g paste is licensed for use in horses and donkeys only. It may be safe for use in goats but this would be an off license use of the medication so you will need to contact your vet for a written prescription for us to send it to you.

Worming two miniature Shetland ponies

Lou

Which is best for a one off treatment for two mini shetlands, does one pack of the paste treat just one pony or will I get two treatments from one pack.

  • VioVet Staff

Each syringe treats up to 600kg in weight. If your Shetlands are both 300kg weight or lower then 1 syringe will cover both of them.
It is only advised to share a syringe if your horses are in close social contact anyway. Sharing syringes can transfer infections between horses of different herds as it is effectively a transfer of saliva.

Whether Panacur is suitable for your Shetlands depends on your worming plan. I recommend reading our blog 'A Quick Guide to Horse Worming' for more information. It's important to follow a good worming plan to reduce the chance of wormer resistance occuring.

Pinworm

Jo

Is this effective for pin worm

  • VioVet Staff

This is not licensed to treat pinworm but it is often advised off license for this use, the 5 day course is recommended for pinworm coverage.

Panacur 5 day for red worms?

Eilidh

Does a 5 day dose of Panacur treat for all the same worms as Equest Pramox and in particular encysted red worms?

  • VioVet Staff

Using Panacur at it's 5 day course dose will treat for encysted redworm. It will not cover tapeworm like Equest Pramox will as it does not contain praziquantel. Essentially it will cover all the same worms Equest Pramox does apart from tapeworm.
