We researched dry dog goods and found Orijen with its high meat content and grain free to be well regarded. More expensive than our previous brand, but our dog loves it and it feels like a great step up in his feeding regime.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Orijen Senior Dog Food, including answers from our team.

Daily amount of Senior orijen

Little Mo

How much should my 12 and a half labradoodle ideally be eating daily? He is not as active as he was when he was younger but still enjoys two 45 minutes walks a day. He has arthritis in his hips but can move along very well whilst walking. He is 28kg and has maintained this weight for most of his adult life.

  • VioVet Staff

Based on the feeding guide pasted below your 28kg dog will need roughly 342g (just under 3 cups) per day, as he classes as an 'active dog' with his exercise regime. This can be split into as many meals as you see fit.
This amount can always be increased/decreased depending on how your dog's weight fluctuates.

Diabetic

Bev

Is this food suitable for a diabetic dog aged 10? Thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

You can use any diet with a diabetic dog but changing the diet might affect your dog's insulin requirements. I recommend running any changes in diet past your vet first.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Chris Banks

Has any one got a cavalier King Charles Spaniel on this pet food my cavaliers needs to lose sum weight

  • VioVet Staff

Orijen Senior is a good complete senior dog diet but it is not aimed at helping dogs lose weight. I would recommend reading our blog How to help your dog lose weight for more information. A dog can lose weight on any diet, it just depends on how much you give.
If you have any specific dietary questions then please contact our customer services on [email protected].

What age should they transfer to senior orijen?

Anna Wallace

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: Bedfordshire, United Kingdom

I have a large labradoodle we rescued this year, he will be seven in February. When should I transition him onto the senior varieity?

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Anna,

If your dog is 7, you probably want to transition him now, although it is perfectly fine to keep him on the food he is currently on if it agrees with him. Switching to a senior food because he is a senior dog isn't always necessary. If you do want to do it though, now is the time. Just make sure you transition him very gradually to reduce the chances of digestive trouble.

I hope this helps.
