Description

Marbocyl P is an antibiotic available in doses for use on dogs, cats, pigs and cattle. It has a broad spectrum of activity and can be used in infections affecting the skin, respiratory system, urinary systems and other soft tissues. Appropriate culture and sensitivity testing of the infectious agent is advised where possible. For mild and localised infections a course lasting a few days is all that is needed, but some infections, such as those involving the deeper layers of the skin, will require a course lasting several weeks. Marbocyl tablets should be given once daily

I believed this to be a strong antibiotic and and my vet recommended I purchase it for my dog's infected anal glands. Unfortunately, it didn't work and the infection is worse now. She has to have the glands/sacs removed, which is very sad.

This is a prescription only anti-biotic prescribed by my Vet. It killed an infection the previous anti-biotic had failed to do. At a rate of 1 pill per day for 7 weeks costing £4 per pill from my Vet I found this very expensive. The cost of this pill from Viovet was £2.74 each. Still very expensive both less than my Vet.

Q & A

How many days should i continue injecting marbocyl

Ruth Pocock

My tortoise was prescribed marbocyl injections by an exotics vet and we have completed his 5 day course, of 1ml intramuscularly each morning. His infected plastron seems better but is still weeping clear fluid. Should I continue the injection for longer?
Thank you for your help.

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only medication so you should follow your vets advice on dosing. If they recommended a 5 day course then you should do this only, you will need to contact your exotics vet for advice on whether you should continue dosing or not.

Is Marbocyl available in a liquid oral form for reptiles. Would there be an adverse reaction giving the injectable for orally to a reptile?

  • VioVet Staff

Strictly speaking this is something only your vet can advise you on, because he/she knows the full details of the case. I can say however that the injectable solution has been used in reptiles, either for injection or given orally, and it is regarded as generally safe and effective. The "recommended" dose is 10mg/kg every 2 days, but this is an unlicensed use and only your vet can advise on the specific risk/benefit analysis.
