Description

Lypex Pancreatic Enzyme Capsules are a top quality, veterinary grade, pancreatic supplement that have been specially developed for the control, management and support of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, irritable bowel syndrome, brush border enzyme deficiencies and bile salt deficiencies. Through quality nutrition, the effects of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency can be mitigated and managed. The enzyme ingredients in Lypex granules have a special enteric coating, which protects them from stomach acid when swallowed. More of the active enzyme reaches the intestine where it can be effective. This has been clinically proven to produce better weight gain in dogs with pancreatic insufficiency than using a powdered, non-coated form of the enzyme. Capsules should be opened and the contents sprinkled onto the food.

  • Protease 1200 - Ph. Eur. U

Uses

An aid for Malassimilation Syndrome in Dogs

Malassimilation syndromes in dogs and cats are well recognised by the veterinary profession; exocrine pancreatic insufficiency , irritable bowel syndrome, brush border enzyme deficiencies and bile salt deficiencies. These disturbances of pancreas or intestine wal function result in a decrease in digestive and absorptive abilities.

Treatment of Pancreas Insufficiency or Malassimilation syndromes

Diagnosis of the primary cause of malassimilation and appropriate treatment is essential in all cases.

Studies show for example that the occurrence of pancreas insufficiency correlates with the level of functional impairment of the pancreas. Importantly, clinical signs of insufficiency appear only below a residual functional tissue of about 10-20%.

In the case of pancreatic insufficiency enzyme supplementation is generally the only course of action. Unfortunately in the majority of the cases this alone is not sufficient, as animals require long-term therapy to manage the condition for the rest of their lives. This will require feeding a highly digestible carbohydrate meal with low fat, high protein content.

This combination ensures improved digestion and absorption of food, directly improving the overall health and body weight of the individual. Occasionally other supportive therapy is required (for instance insulin in diabetics or steroids in inflammatory bowel diseases).

Why is Lypex different to other pancreatic supplements?

Most pancreatic preparations come in a powder form and these enzymes are not protected from acid digestion. This result in two-thirds of ingested pancreatic enzymes being destroyed in the stomach before they reach the small intestine.

To compensate for this destruction pancreatic enzymes powders are therefore fed in very high quantities and concentrations.

This can have various side effects such as:

1) Causing erosion of the mucus membranes of the oesophagus and mouth.

2) Causing irritation to the skin of the owner and animal.

Lypex is a unique veterinary pancreatic enzyme supplement using technology developed in the human field. The purified and concentrated pancreatic enzymes are made into micro-pellets and each pallet is enteric-coated. This gives 100% protection to the enzymes from the damaging degradative acids present in the stomach.

Within then minutes of the pallets passing the stomach to alkaline environment of the small intestine the protective enteric coating dissolves and releases the protected enzymes to maximise digestion.

55 Effectively resolved my dogs pancreatitis
Verified Purchase

Given 14 capsules via my vet after my dogs first experience of pancreatitis. They worked brilliantly. But after symptoms reappeared and a bit of research I realised I would probably need to keep my dog on them. Needless to say they are far cheaper to purchase through this website than my vet. I will be back to purchase more.

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Lypex Pancreatic Enzyme Capsules, including answers from our team.

Lypex amounts

Cate

I gave a 25kg collie who has pancreatic issues. We have been using Lypex, 2 capsules per day
Is this the correct amount for her weight and is there other products we could use.

  • VioVet Staff

For dogs over 10kg, 2 capsules per day.
The total daily amount should be divided equally between feeds. It should be sprinkled and mixed in with the food.

Lypex

David

Can I remove the shell and replace with empty shell and use pill popper to feed my cats once a day? Or twice a day divided to 2 capsule? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The feeding guidelines for this product state the capsules must be opened and not administered whole. It is therefore not advised to give them with a capsule gel.
The enzymes within must be a part of any food that is given, they help break down this food where your pet cannot normally do this. Therefore the dose should be split between however many meals your pet has.
You should discuss this with your vet if you have any concerns regarding the above.

Skin irritation

Jane Marsden

  • VioVet customer since 2020
  • From: Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

My dog has recently increased her dosage to 2, twice a day. She cannot stop scratching. She has no obvious skin issues and is up to date with worming and de-fleaing. Could it be the higher dose? This was increased to improve her diarrhoea which has worked. Also she is still obsessed with trying to get food and will pull me over to get to any she smells.

  • VioVet Staff

It is unlikely but not impossible that the scratching is related. If your dog was allergic to one of the ingredients then any amount would cause the itching so it is likely the itching would've occured when first using the supplement.
I recommend contacting your vet as the itching is likely unrelated and due to another issue that they can diagnose.

Chronic pancreatitis

Dawn

If not lypex what would you recommend for chronic pancreatitis?

  • VioVet Staff

Lypex contains enzymes that the pancreas naturally produces. In Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) this function is reduced and so supplementation is needed. If the pancreas is severely damaged then EPI can occur secndary to pancreatitis, however this is rare.
It is best to chat to your vet about treating Chronic Pancreatitis. Normally it is advised to reduce recurrence by controlling the diet; low fat food with minimal/no dietary changes or additions (no treats/scavenging where possible). Additional medications may be required depending on your dog's specific condition, it is advised to discuss this further with your vet.

Will the contents dissolve in water

Rachael

I’m having trouble getting my cat to take his tablets he has clocked onto us putting it in his food and we have hit a block would these work but putting them in liquid with a syringe as we have given our other cat medication with this method and worked

  • VioVet Staff

Yes these can be mixed with water instead. They should be administered whenever food is eaten as they are supplementary enzymes which aim to replace any your cat's body is not producing. These are needed for digestion so must be present when food is eaten.

Ok for cats?

Teresa

I’ve been buying these from the vet in the blister pack, but I never see the box. Is this one showing a dog on the box ok for cats?

  • VioVet Staff

Lypex is for both cats and dogs. There is a picture of a cat on the box too, it is well hidden surrounded by the picture of the dog. I apologise for any confusion caused.

Can i mix it

sue

can i mix it up with water she will not eat her food with it on

  • VioVet Staff

The Lypex must be given in any food that is ingested. This is because it contains the digesteive enzymes that dogs with EPI lack and so it supplements these to allow normal digestion of any food that is eaten.
It can be given with water at the same time as a meal, but ultimately it must be administered at the same time or just before/after food is eaten.

How long can Lypex last on food

Sara

  • VioVet customer since 2020
  • From: East Sussex, United Kingdom

Hi, I’m hoping to create a paste from my dogs kibble (by mushing it with water) and using this on walks in a squeezable tube as a treat however if I add Lypex to this how long will the Lypex last on it?
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Lypex contains enzymes that are normally secreted by the pancreas, in dogs that have exocrine pancreatic insufficiency they must be supplemented. These enzymes break down food, so as soon as they are applied to food they will start breaking it down. This will mean the food can be digested but it also will grow mould and bacteria quicker. I do not advise applying the the supplement onto food that you do not intend to use within the next few hours as it could quickly go off in this way.

My Bichon/Maltese of 4yrs old is on Lypex. Is there a special diet she should have because of this?

JACOBINA LYALL

I am concerned that she is not getting appropriate dietary support!

  • VioVet Staff

Lypex is used for the treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. If your dog is being treated for this then I strongly advise discussing any treatment plans, including the diet, with your vet. However if pancreatic enzymes are supplemented then most foods are suitable for a dog with EPI.

Can we increase Lypex dose to enable weight gain?

Mary

Our dog was diagnosed with EPI and IBD four months ago having suffered severe diarrhea and dropped from 21 to 16 kilos in weight. Since we have been adding Lypex to her diet (one capsule twice a day) the diarrhea has stopped but her weight has not increased beyond 19 kilos and she is very thin and boney for her build. She also seems constantly hungry. Can we give her an additional meal to which we add another capsule to help her gain weight? Is 3 capsules a day too much?

  • VioVet Staff

Lypex contains pancreatic enzymes that supplement any that are deficient in your dog. Increasing the dose should not increase weight gain, unless the correct dose hasn't been established. The faeces should be a normal consistency and this is a good indicator that the correct dose is being used.
It may be benefecial to change the diet or add more into the diet in order to help weight gain. If your dog is hungry then you can increase the amount of food you give. However I recommend discussing this with your vet as dogs with EPI and IBD can be very sensitive to dietary changes.
