Description

Ipakitine is useful for reducing the levels of phosphates and other substances which are present in many normal foods, but which cause trouble for cats and dogs with reduced kidney function. Ipakitine should be given every day to animals along with their normal food.

Numerous studies have shown the benefits of phosphate reduction in cats and dogs suffering from kidney failure and it is now widely accepted that there is a direct link between the length and quality of life of a cat or dog with kidney failure and the amount of phosphates they get through their food.

The ingredients in Ipakitine act as phosphate binding agents and lower the absorption of phosphates from the intestines. Thus, in respect of phosphate restriction they can mimic or enhance the effects of a phosphate restricted food. There is also a reduction in the absorption of some uraemic toxins that can affect normal kidney function.

Through this double action, Ipakitine supports normal kidney function.

Ipakitine contains

Calcium carbonate – proven phosphate binding properties*

Chitosan – derived from chitin, by a process of de-acetylation. Chitin is a natural substance, the main building material of exoskeletons of arthropods. Due to chitosan’s specific molecular properties, it acts as an absorbent in the intestines and thus lowers the absorption of certain substances that can be harmful to the kidneys, including phosphates and some uraemic toxins.*

45 Seems good

I was a little bit concerned she might not accept it as it seems a lot of powder on her food but she has accepted it without any issues. It seems to be helping her feel more comfortable and the pee clumps in the litter tray are back to a healthier size as well.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Ipakitine (phosphate binder) for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Preventative cause

Hallabalou

Can you use this product as a preventative cause of kidney disease?

  • VioVet Staff

This product does not prevent kidney disease but it can be useful as a treatment in patients with kidney disease. It helps modulate nutrient levels (namely phosphate) within the diet to reduce their levels within the body, as they can be high with the condition.

Dosage

cultaine

Hi my vet has said to use 1/2 a scoop twice a day on food . As we are feeding our cat 4 times a day due to weight loss .Is it ok to add 1/2 scoop to every meal she is getting without overdosing her .She is 3,8kg at the moment and has kidney disease .Thank you .

  • VioVet Staff

Ipaktine works best if included in all food that your cat eats, this is because it's main use is to bind phosphate within the food and so reduce dietary intake of it.
The doseage is as follows:
1g / 5kg body weight twice daily, mixed with food, for up to 6 months initially. One level scoop measures 1g of powder. It is recommended that a check up is performed every 6 months. Administration can be life-long. Allow free access to fresh water during administration.

If your cat is 3.8kg then the manufacturer advise a total dose of 1+1/2 level scoops daily. If you are feeding 4 times daily then the dosing guidance as per the manufacturer would be just over 1/3 of a scoop with each meal.
It is important to run this past your vet first though. They may have an important reason for suggesting the 1/2 scoop twice daily dosing.

Can Ipakitine be mixed in water and administered via syringe?

Curly

I have been advised by my vet to give Charlie my cat Ipakitine to help with his kidneys. He is already on a dry food kidney diet (didn't like the wet version). Have mixed Ipakitine with biscuits, but he's not interested. Can it be administered by mixing with water and giving via syringe?

  • VioVet Staff

Ipakitine is a phosphate binder which means it reduces phopshate in any food that is eaten by binding it. It therefore must be giving with food for it to have an effect, it should not be dosed significantly far before/after food. You can mix it with water and syringe in this way but only if you do this very soon after or before eating. It is advised to use some palatable wet food instead to give the product if administration on dry food is an issue. You should only use food that your vet advises is safe for use though as controlling the diet is an important part of treating kidney disease.

Ipakitine use with feline Polycystic Kidney Disease stage 2

Karen Fielder

Is Ipakitine recommended to help with feline Polycystic Kidney Disease Stage 2?

  • VioVet Staff

Ipakitine is a phosphate binder, this means it binds phosphate in any food it is added to and so prevents excessive absorption from the guts into the blood. This is important as phosphate levels can rise too high in pets with kidney disease.
If your cat is on a special kidney diet then this will already have it's phosphate levels restricted and an additional binder like Ipakitine is usually not needed. It is advised to discuss whether using Ipakitine is appropriate with your vet.

Can Ipakitine be given to Guinea pigs?

  • VioVet Staff

This supplement is intended for use in cats and dogs only. If you need recommendations of products to treat your Guinea Pig that has kidney disease then it is advised to see your vet. They will be able to suggest off label options.

Fat cat

Pixie

My senior cat weighs nearly 7kg - what’s the right dose for her please?

  • VioVet Staff

The dose as per the packaging is 1g/5kg body weight twice daily, mixed with food. Therefore your 7kg cat will need 1.4g twice daily. This can be estimated if working out exactly 1.4g is difficult.
This product should only be used alongside advice from your vet to it is recommended to contact them for a treatment plan if you are unsure.

Period of use

Linda Logan

My diabetic cat's kidney values were creeping up over a period of months during a time when his diabetes became uncontrolled due to a U T I. I started giving him Ipakitine on the advice of a friend, and his latest blood profile shows that his kidney values, along with his phosphorous levels, are now in the normal range. Do I continue putting Ipakitine in his food please ?

  • VioVet Staff

Ipakitine is primarily a phosphate binder. This means it binds to phopshate in the food and prevents absorption of phosphate into the body. Phosphate is removed from the body by the kidneys and when they are injured this removal process is reduced, therefore phosphate binders like this prevent the build up of phosphate in the body reaching toxic levels.
It should only be used if your pet needs their phosphate levels reducing. This is usually picked up on a blood test. I therefore strongly advise discussing it's use with your vet, they will be best to advise on whether there are ongoing kidney issues and it needs to be continued.

Small cat dose

Marie

My small senior cat is struggling to change to renal diet due to diarrhoea so I brought this for her regular food.
How much should I give her a day?She weighs 2.7kg.Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Your 2.7kg cat will need just under 1/2 a scoop of this supplement twice daily. You should run it's use past your vet as if they have recommended a renal diet then it is important to feed only this wherever possible.

Suitable for stage 1?

Phillipa bent

It’s this product suitable for cats in stage 1 ckd?

  • VioVet Staff

Ipakitine is a phopshate binder and can be very useful to help manage kidney disease in cats. It can be used in any stage of CKD but it should only be used as part of a treatment plan. If your cat is already on a renal veterinary diet then they may not need the ipakitine. I recommend discussing it's use with your vet.

Feed Ipakitine before food

M.W

Can I mix ipakitine in water and feed my dog before food?
Or can I feed Ipakitine on its own before food?

  • VioVet Staff

Ipakitine works by binding phosphate in any food it is applied to, preventing it being absorbed and so reducing blood posphate levels. It must be given with food and cannot be given separately otherwise it cannot carry out this effect.
