Easy to use and has got rid of the lice that have been plaguing my rescue chickens since we got them months ago, it's the only thing that's worked!

I use it on my birds regularly as some tend to get scaly leg. They free range a lot, so are bound to pick some things up from the wildlife. A few drops go a long way. Please note that there is an egg withdrawal period after use. That is fine - gives us a chance to catch up!

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Harkers Harka-Mectin, including answers from our team.

Oral use?

K Weave

Can this be given orally or only topically. My birds do much better with oral applications.

  • VioVet Staff

Harka-Mectin is a spot on treatment and should not be given orally. If you are looking for an oral medication for pidgeons that treats external mites then I suggest Harkers 4 in 1 Soluble which is administered via the drinking water.

Grape worm.

Helen Brown

Will this be effective for grape worm in chickens?

  • VioVet Staff

This medication is only licensed for use in pigeons, any use in chickens is off license and we can only dispense for this alongside a written prescription from your vet.
Flubenvet or Flubendazole 1% will treat gapeworm and these are licensed for use in chickens. I recommend ordering this instead, these are over the counter.

Lewys Will it clear air sac mi

Will it work for air sac mites in budgies

  • VioVet Staff

This product is only licensed for use in pigeons, if you are looking for a licensed mite treatment in Budgies then I would recommend using Beaphar Anti Parasite spot on Small (Canary/Budgie).

Use in chickens?

VioVet Visitor

Can this be used on chickens.for red mite?

  • VioVet Staff

Red mites spend most of their time not on the birds, but in nooks a crannies near to where birds roost. It is better to apply a suitable product to the perches etc, but the Harka-Mectin will be effective against mites which climb onto the birds to feed.
