Love this, he doesn’t even know I’m dosing him, having to cycle worm meds this year as they seem to be becoming resilient to Panacur?

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Eqvalan Horse and Donkey Wormer, including answers from our team.

Can I give my foal Eqvalan Duo

Claire

Can I give my foal Eqvalan Duo? Or should I give the foal Eqvalan only and not the Duo?

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on the age of your foal. Eqvalan can be used safely in foals of any age. Eqvalan Duo states that 'Safety studies were not conducted in foals younger than 2 months of age, or in stallions. The use of Eqvalan Duo is not recommended in these categories of animals.'
It is not recommended to cover tapeworms until at least 6 months old anyway though, this is because tapeworms are gained through grazing. Eqvalan Duo only differs from Eqvalan by having an additional tapewormer ingredient.

What worms will it kill.

Sue

can you give a list of what each one kills. please.

  • VioVet Staff

The list of worms that Eqvalan, containing ivermectin, eliminates is a very large one. I will paste this below but all you really need to know is that it kills roundworms. It does not eliminate tapeworms. Eqvalan Duo will eliminate tapeworms and roundworms though as it contains praziquantel alongside the ivermectin.

Does this wormer control encysted Redworm in horses?

Sian Steel

  • VioVet customer since 2020
  • From: Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Please can you confirm if this wormer controls encysted redworm in horses?

  • VioVet Staff

This wormer contains ivermectin which does not treat encysted redworm. You will need to use moxidectin (Equest/Equest Pramox) or a 5 day course of fenbendazole (Panacur) for this effect.

Encysted red worm

Rebecca anne calder

What wormer can be used this time of year to cover encysted red worm in donkeys

  • VioVet Staff

The only wormer licensed to treat encysted redworm in donkeys is Panacur (fenbendazole) when used at the 5 day course doseage. Equest (moxidectin) will treat this but it is not licensed for use in donkeys. it may be safe for use in donkeys but as this is an off license use of the medication you will need a written prescription from your vet to purchase it with us.
Eqvalan contains ivermectin and will treat redworm but not the encysted winter stage.

Can I give this product to a mare that will be nearly 5 months pregnant

Kirsty Bolton

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Denbighshire, United Kingdom

Can I give this product to a nearly 5 months pregnant mare (26 Sep 21 she will be 5 months) as when I go to order it says unsuitable even though in the advice section it says it is safe as long as over 3 months

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for these two wormers state the following:

Eqvalan Duo:
In the absence of clinical data in early pregnancy Eqvalan Duo can only
be used in the first three months of gestation according to a risk
benefit analysis by the veterinarian.

Eqvalan:
Horses and donkeys of all ages, including pregnant mares and breeding stallions, have been treated with no adverse effect.

Both products are therefore safe for use in your pregnant mare of 5 months gestation.

Donkey tapeworm wormer

Clive Tinsley

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Sir Gaerfyrddin, United Kingdom

Hi why do you not recommended duo for tapeworm in donkeys

  • VioVet Staff

Eqvalan is licensed for use in donkeys but Eqvalan Duo is not. This is because Duo has not been tested and proven safe for use in donkeys so we cannot dispense it for this use.
If you wish to cover tapeworms in your donkey then you can use a double dose of Strongid-P. This is licensed for use in donkeys.

Strongyles and small red

Katie Bell

My pony has tested for Strongyles and low level small red. Will Eqvalan treat both of these?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, Eqvalan contains ivermectin which will treat both Strongyles and Small Redworm. It will not cover the encysted stages of small redworm however they only encyst during the winter months and ivermectin will be effective against small redworm in their current state.

Flavour

Marion

Is Eqvalan Duo flavoured to appeal to horses i.e. apple for example? I want to give it to my youngster in his feed.

  • VioVet Staff

Hello

Thank you for your enquiry.

Eqvalan Duo is one of the unflavoured horse wormers. Hopefully your youngster will not mind it being mixed into his food, however it is important to ensure that he receives the full dose in one go.

Noropraz is an ivermectin and praziquantel based alternative (same active ingredients as Eqvalan Duo) that is apple flavoured :)

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Danielle
