About

Horses and ponies grazing sparse vegetation or given hay or feed spread out on sandy or very dry and dusty soils, can ingest varying amounts of sand. This sand can accumulate in the gut and cause digestive disturbances, adversely affecting the normal functioning of the gut.

Sandout Pellets contains over 90% Psyllium husk – from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant. Psyllium husk contains around 70% soluble fibre, and is known to absorb water rapidly (increasing in size by tenfold) and forming a gelatinous compound containing glycosides and mucilages.

It is thought that this gelatinous psyllium helps to stimulate the muscular waves or peristalsis which pushes the contents of the gut along its length, helping to expel the excess sand which may have accumulated in the gut.

Because of the abrasive nature of sand as it moves through the digestive system, the gut lining may be effected, upsetting the balance of the vital microbiome (“gut bugs”) which normally adheres to the gut lining. So Sandout Pellets also contains a probiotic to help restore a healthy microbiome.

Sandout Pellets should be fed for 7 consecutive days in each month to avoid the gut and the microbiome becoming accustomed to the psyllium, and using it as a soluble fibre source rather than an aid to sand expulsion. Feeding for longer than 7 days should be discussed with your veterinary surgeon.

Important note for feeding:

Do not add to wet food, or allow to soak up moisture as this will activate the product before reaching the gut. If you do need to add to soaked feed we recommend keeping Sandout Pellets as dry as possible and adding immediately before feeding.

Pack size 2.6kg provides 4 x 7 day courses.

55 Sandy soil saver

Was recommended this by the vets who performed my ponies sand colic surgery. Our whole area has Sandy soil so moving him wasnā€™t an option. He gets this every day in feed, as do his brothers, and he has since recovered well. We will never take him off this, especially in winter when heā€™s more likely to be intaking sand. We double the dose in the colder months on vets advice and he seems to like the taste! Have no problems getting him to eat the pellets. Not the cheapest but itā€™s a lot cheaper than his vet bill was! I would highly recommend to anyone who has a horse on sandy paddocks.

I have used this product a number of times now, was recommended by my vet following a horse of ours having sand colic. Very palatable fortunately as our TB was off all food at the time. Have continued to use as a preventative due to our area having sandy soil.

The horses were not keen on eating it, I haven't had this problem with other products.

Sand out

Timothy Flint

  • VioVet customer since 2015
  • From: Derbyshire, United Kingdom

My horse has had recurring colic. After severe attack was diagnosed with possible sand colic. She's been free of colic for 5weeks now. We have used the sand out as prescribed by vet. Two weeks 80grams twice daily . a week off then back to the two weeks on. 80 grams twice daily. Would it be advisable to continue using it at a maintenance level. If so how much should I use and how often.

  • VioVet Staff

If your horse is grazing on sandy pasture then it would be a good idea to continue with sand out. You could discuss with your vet also but I would recommend feeding for 1 week each month at 80g twice daily.

What is in sand out other than psyllius

does the horse require magnesium sulphate with this product for it to work
oil?
what about using a probiotic such as in product assure

thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Sand-out contains Psyllium seed husks, Bentonite and Sodium Propionate but no Magnesium Sulphate as far as I am aware. It doesn't need to be fed with a probiotic or magnesium sulphate in order to be effective but can safely be fed with either. Feeding your horse a probiotic is always a good idea to help maintain healthy gut function as suggested with the Assure products. You should not need to add any oil or other type of lubricant- once in the gut it will take on a gel like consistency that will lubricate the gut.

How big are the particles?

Anne

My horse chokes and can only eat soaked nuts, no hay or chaff. Can standout be mixed in wet feed?

  • VioVet Staff

This product can be mixed in wet feed to make it easier to swallow. It is always important to mix the food thoroughly, to ensure that there are no dry pockets of food within the bucket. Then it should not be a problem. It is better to make it slightly over-moist than a bit dry for sensitive horses.
