Used on my older mare and yearling, never had a problem and doesn’t upset thier tummies despite, concentrated formula and small quantity helps a lot when you’ve got horses that are difficult to worm, a lot less ends up on the floor, I’ve found violet are always the cheapest place to get wormers

In foal and lactating mares

Is this wormer okay for infoal (very early stages and late stages) mares and also for mares which are feeding a foal.

Thankyou

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication states the following:
The product can be used safely in mares during the whole pregnancy period and lactation period.

Donkeys

Can this be used for donkeys

  • VioVet Staff

This wormer is not licensed for use in donkeys and so we cannot advise it for this use. If you wish to tapeworm your donkey then we recommend using a pyrantel containing product that is licensed for use in donkeys at the tapeworm dose regime (double the normal dose rate). Examples include Strongid-P and Embotape.

Does this treat red worm?

Molly Smockum Owen

Does this treat red worm?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this treats redworm (Cyathostomins). It does not treat the encysted stage of redworm though which is important to cover during the winter months. It is advised to use a wormer containing Moxidectin (Equest) or a 5 day course of Fenbendazole (Panacur) to do this.

Lenore

Is this a suitable wormer for foals?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Equimax can be used in foals. It is worth noting as tapeworm infestations are unlikely to occur in horses before two months of age, treatment of foals below this age are not considered necessary. Therefore it should only be used when your foal is old enough to need tapeworm coverage.
Before then we suggest using a wormer such as Panacur (fenbendazole) or Strongid-P (pyrantel).

I have wormed my pony today. How long should I wait before turning him out
in a field with other horses in a new home. For the benefit of the other horses.

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication does advise that the ingredients can contaminate local watersources during treatment however it does not specify the time period you should not turn your horse out for.
Equest (another horse wormer) however does have guidance on this and I suggest following this as a good protocol:

In order to limit the impact of moxidectin on dung fauna, and due to insufficient data regarding environmental risk of praziquantel, horses should not be turned out onto pasture within 3 days of treatment.
Treated animals should not have access to watercourses during the first week after treatment.

Regarding the benefit of the other horses. It would be sensible to wait a similar period as above for the environment to ensure that any worms are killed and excreted, and so do not contaminate the new pasture. Many stables will advise worming a horse 5 days before moving to their new home/pasture.

Equimax

Jacky

how long does this wormer last for

  • VioVet Staff

Equimax will work within a few hours of dosing and be out of the system within a few days, it will not have any significant persistent effect. Wormers do not tend to have a lasting effect which is why repeat egg counts and testing is recommended. I advise reading our blog on this topic, link provided here.

Double dose

Stephanie Clifton

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: Worcestershire, United Kingdom

Do I need to double dose to treat for tapeworm?

  • VioVet Staff

Equimax contains praziquantel to treat tapeworms, this does not need to be given at a double dose to be effective. Only ingredients containing Pyrantel (e.g. Strongid-P) must be given at double dose for tapeworm coverage. This wormer should only be used at the standard dosing as per the datasheet.

Overdosed

Victoria

I have accidentally overdosed my mare. I locked the syringe to 450kg as per her weight etc but it was faulty which resulted in giving her the whole 700 kg tube. I am unsure if she’s in foal, however she would be around 9 months if she is.

Do I need to do anything? I have read this is safe for foals and broodmares. Just a bit worried.

Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding overdoses:
A tolerance study performed in foals from 2 weeks of age with doses up to 5 times the recommended dosage showed no adverse reactions.
Safety studies conducted with Equimax administered to mares at 3 times the recommended dosage at 14 day intervals during the whole gestation and lactation did not show any abortions, any adverse effects on the gestation, parturition and on the mares general health, nor any abnormalities on the foals.
Safety studies conducted with Equimax administered to stallions at 3 times the recommended dosage did not show any adverse effects in particular on the reproductive performances.

The overdose you gave is under 2 times the standard dose. Based on the information above it is very unlikely to cause any issues. If you notice any abnormal signs though it is advised to contact your vet.
