Description

Dentisept is a vanilla flavoured palatable oral paste containing chlorhexidine, a well- known antiseptic, with antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. Dentisept also contains not only chlorhexidine, a special binding adhesive compound to ensure excellent contact to gums and teeth giving 24 hours of activity.

Dentisept can be used anytime that an antiseptic environment in the mouth is required:

  • Gingivitis
  • Stomatitis
  • Periodontitis
  • Plaque and tartar management
  • Infected oral masses/polyps

Directions:

Apply DENTISEPT after feeding to maximise its benefits. For application attach the enclosed applicator to the tube. This allows easier access to the rear gum. Carefully distribute a pea sized amount with a finger or brush. Thoroughly cover the surface to be treated (teeth, gums).

Dentisept contains a sticky polymer which allows the slow release of chlorhexidine over a period of 24 hours. Dentisept increases in stickiness in moist areas and it sticks to both gums and teeth. The packaging contains a soft applicator which can be used to apply Dentisept directly. This can be used to access difficult oral areas, like the rear gums, or onto skin areas like in between the toes.

Or, alternatively, a pea sized amount of Dentisept can be applied directly with a finger into the mouth or on skin folds.

By maintaining a normal environment in the mouth the formation of damaging properties like tartar and plaque can be reduced. Dentisept can be applied daily, twice weekly or weekly depending on the condition.

For best results when being applied to the mouth, Dentisept should be used after feeding. If animals can tolerate brushing, Dentisept can also be brushed on with a toothbrush. When applying to skin, Dentisept is re-applied every 24 hours, until improvement.

I’ve used Dentisept for years now, for both my dog and my cats. It’s easy to apply, I put just a small amount at each side in their mouth and the product migrates around their teeth - give it a try, I’d recommend it highy

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding DentiSept, including answers from our team.

Diabetes/sensitive tummy

Lorri

Hi, I wonder if you can tell me if this toothpaste is OK to use in dogs with diabetes and that has a sensitive tummy especially with poultry. He Possibly has had pancreatitis also.
Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

DentiSept is vanilla flavoured and does not have chicken as one of it's listed ingredients. The ingredient list is as follows:
1 g of Gel contains:
Chlorhexidine 2 mg
Aromatica
Excipiens ad pastam.

It therefore should be suitable considering your dog's allergies. Regarding the diabetes and pancreatitis, it does not have sugar/glucose or oils/fats in it's ingredient list either so it should also be appropriate regarding these conditions.
It is advised to run it's use past your vet though to be safe. However it is likely to be the best option regarding toothpaste for your specific pet.

Dentisept and dog toothpaste

Irene

Can ordinary dog toothpaste be used on the days dentisept is not used. Many thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on why you are using Dentispet, I recommend discussing this with the vet who advised you to use Dentisept in the first place as they may not want other products interfering.

How to apply

Kevin Lambert

I had a cat with inflammation of the gums. My vet said try and brush his teeth but he is aggressive when near his mouth. I have read you can put cat toothpaste gels etc on there paws and the cats will clean it off. This is another way to apply will it work and will it still help?

  • VioVet Staff

If the mouth is sore then it may be hard to apply products like this, as your cat will not let you near their mouth. Ideally it should be applied on the gumline at the base of the teeth. If this is not possible then it can be given as a treat but it will be far less effective when used in this way.
I recommend reading our blog 'Should I brush my cats teeth?' for more information.

Pain relief?

Alib

I think our dog suffers from dental pain, would this help? She is elderly, and had a stroke a few months ago, so I don't want to put her through anaesthesic. Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Dentisept is an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal gel that can help treat gingivitis or infections within the mouth. It is unlikely to reduce any pain from dental disease though. If the teeth are bad enough to cause significant pain then I strongly advise seeing your vet, they can prescribe pain relief and recommend other appropriate treatments depending on the diagnosis.

How long?

Denise Davies

How long is it safe to use this product for please?

  • VioVet Staff

It is safe to use long-term and this is often done. It is sometimes said that long-term use can stain the teeth slightly, but I am not sure if this is a genuine observation.
