35 Dog loves it but not suitable for Pancreatitis!! 18.1% Fat!!

By on 27 February 2017

I got this for my weimaraner who developed pancreatitis after reading that it was low in fat against my better judgement as it is not made from human grade ingredients. A pancreatic diet must be as low in fat as possible and should be around 5% on a dry matter basis NOT on an `as fed` basis which I was intitially unaware of. Denes pancreatitis info leaflet is very misleading and potentially dangerous to a dog with pancreatitis. They state their food is 2.9% fat on an as fed basis and is suitable for a pancreatic dog whilst in reality this food works out at a whopping 18.1% fat on a dry matter basis. I was horrified that I had been feeding this to my boy and wondered why he wasn`t improving! Dog loves the food but a no go for a low fat diet! You`ll find all the real fat contents in most dog foods, wet and dry on https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

This is a great dog food. I was worried it wouldn't be light enough for my mini daxsie but he loves it and it is keeping his weight steady (having lost on another product). Recomend this.

Low fat dog food

jane

Hi, just wanted to know if denes chicken and liver wet dog food would be suitable for my 6yr old male boxer dog, as he has just been diagnosed with pancreatitis, and has to have a low fat diet, he is at moment on boiled chicken and rice, and odd can of royal cannin which is too expensive as vets says he would need 3 to 4 cans a day, he is still recovering from a bad bout of pancreatitis. Thanks

This diet is not low in fat and so I would not recommend it for your dog. If you cannot affors one of the rommended veterinary diets, you could perhaps choose any of the lower calorie, w3eight loss type foods, which are made with more carbohydrate and fibre and less fat. They can suit dogs with pancreatitis. Again the best ones are not cheap, such as Hills w/d. Alternatively you can make youir own food and add a multivitamin and mineral supplement to it, though that tends not to work out any cheaper in fact.
