Continental Bits offer the poll pressure and leverage of a Curb Bit, but do not restrict the jaw with a curb chain, making them less severe. Similar to a conventional gag, Continental Bits work by raising the bit in the horse's mouth. However this action is limited thus reducing the severity. They are useful for activities such as cross country as the poll pressure encourages the horse to lift its head after jumping.
