Have had a flea problem with my cat and dogs for a few months, and was recommended this spray by my vet. In total I have used 5 cans throughout my house ( large 4 bed) over a 6 week period and feel that the problem is much better. Also changed the flea treatment for pets.

I take my dogs up to Cumbria regularly. Last time each dog came home with 5 ticks each to be removed with tick hooks. This is normal. This time I gave them a quick spray with this at the start of the week and mid way through. Just one tick each! I think if I'd actually been more thorough and combed it through their coats there'd have been none. There is quite a strong smell probably cloves or something but that's part of what works and its not really unpleasant... In fact it helped when one rolled in something! Spray isn't loud so doesn't upset the dogs tho they don't understand why you're wetting them. It quickly dries.

Great product for helping to stave off those pesky ticks. It smells like cloves so not at all chemical like some other products you can buy elsewhere!

55 Best thing we've used and it's not harming our pets

Best thing we've used and it's not harming our pets, we've used this product ever since taking our dog's to Scotland..prior to living up there, and it's more than great value for money !
It does smell a tad when first applied, but nothing nasty..and the smell soon goes. (Even so,if rather my dogs smell a tad short term than be full of harsh chemicals)
I can't fault this product, 100% natural and lasts a fair amount of time too.
Definitely recommend.

Susan Chapple

If my dog licks his coat will it make him ill?

  • VioVet Staff

The most common signs of toxicity from pyrethrum-based flea products are muscle tremors and excessive salivation. Common signs of toxicity from flea products containing organophosphates are diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, small pupils, muscle tremor, weakness or falling over, and drooling.

Cannot be used in conjunction with regular flea and tick treatment

Julie Sayer

Hi. My dog is on a regular flea and tick treatment from the vets. Can this product be used at the same time as those to help prevent picking up ticks on walks.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this is safe to use alongside medicative flea/tick treatment. It provides a physical natural oil barrier to provide protection against them.

Can this be used on cats? They lick more than dog

  • VioVet Staff

This product is only intended for use on dogs so it is uncertain how it would affect a cat. We therefore cannot advise it for this use. If you would like recommendations on how to prevent/treat parasites in your cat then please get in touch at [email protected].

How often should I spray my dogs with this

Victoria Alexandra Germain

How often should I spray my dogs with this, they are out every day in woodland. Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This spray should be reapplied every time your dog heads out for a walk where you are wanting tick coverage.

jane

can this be used on cats?

  • VioVet Staff

This product is intended for use on dogs only, I cannot comment on it's safety on cats unfortunately. If you are looking for a product to treat ticks in cats then I would advise checking out our Cat Flea/tick/lice product range.

Use with Advocate

Michael

My Westie has had all sorts of Skin allergy problems, he is now on tablets for life to combat this. The vet has also recommended Advocate for control of fleas and worms, unfortunately though Advocate does not cover tics, will this product be safe to use alongside Advocate?

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your question.

As the Barrier Flea & Tick Spray is a natural repellant, this will not interact with the ingredients in Advocate so is safe to use in conjunction.

I hope this helps.

Tick prevention

Deb

We give our dogs Frontline flea snd tick medication. However it does not repel the ticks and this season we have to be constantly removing ticks from their bodies. Obviously if they have a disease they have transmitted it to our dogs.
Can you spray be used in conjunction with Frontline? If so do we need to do it before each walk?

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Deb,

Yes, you can use Barrier Flea & Tick Spray before walks - concentrate especially on the legs and underbelly.

The sooner you can remove the ticks, the lower the risk of disease transmission (if the tick is carrying something), so it sounds like you're doing everything right! Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we can prevent all ticks attaching but together with products like Frontline and removing any you do find, we can keep risk as low as possible.

We have a couple of blogs (Tick Season & Lyme Disease, and Babesiosis: what you need to know) you might find interesting and they include signs to watch out for with regards to tick-borne diseases. I hope this helps!

Is this product like fly Gard

  • VioVet Staff

There are a number of other products which have names like fly gard. Some contain the chemical DEET which is more potent as a deterrent for insect pests, but its chemical nature and the solvents used can be concerning for some people. The Barrier product is not the same and works in a different way. Some people prefer one, some the other.

Frequench and Applicaton

Sella

Thank you for your previous answer. One more question. My dogs are getting the ticks around the eye area. What would ne the best method of application here? I thought about spraying some on a tissue/cloth and wiping their heads. Would this be okay?
Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, I would put on some rubber gloves and then do exactly as you have suggested.

Frequency

Stella

How often do you have to apply?

  • VioVet Staff

This is a very mild product and so is very safe. A small amount can be applied up to every day, depending on the size of the animal. The likelihood of ticks or fleas attaching to your animal varies enormously depending on environmental factors and time of year etc, so how often you will actually need to apply it is difficult to predict and you will need to judge according to effect.
