Clinical Considerations & Diet Characteristics
Low phosphorus - helps to protect against hyperphosphatemia and the associated renal damage
Restricted but high quality protein - minimize the formation of uremic toxins and the intake of non-essential amino acids
Low sodium - helps compensate for the diseased kidney’s inability to regulate this mineral (then minimizes the risk of hypertension)
Added potassium citrate - helps reduce the risk of hypokalemia and helps to maintain alkaline urine, appropriate for managing calcium oxalate urolithiasis
Non acidifying diet - promotes a urine pH of 6,7 to 7,5 ad lib, which reduces the risk of acidosis, and helps manage calcium oxalate urolithiasis
Source of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids - help reduce glomerular hypertension and minimize inflammation
Target urinary pH 7,1 +/- 0,4
Dosage
Before changing diets, it is important to stabilize and treat any complications, including dehydration.
As with any diet change, it is better to switch gradually over the course of five to ten days.
Warming canned food can help enhance palatability for anorectic dogs.
You should provide the dog with small quantities of food several times a day in a quiet environment.
